Scientific Revolution Unit 3 Ms. Hunt RMS IB

What was the Scientific Revolution? The Scientific Revolution was the creation of modern day science and scientific study. When did it occur? and 1600s Caused by the Renaissance! What was changed? – Scientists turned to using education, reason, and careful observation instead of religion. – Scientists began to re-examining old theories – Development of new fields of study like astronomy and anatomy.

New Form of Study- The Scientific Method New methods to study nature and science – No longer accepted ancient teachings of religious leaders Conclusions based on observation and experimentation

Revolutionary Scientist- Galileo Built telescope Earth moves around the sun Persecuted by the Catholic Church Forced to deny his conclusions Turn and Talk!- Why do you think Galileo was persecuted by the Church?

Revolutionary Scientist- Isaac Newton Mathematics teacher who invented calculus Developed the Law of Gravity Built the foundation of modern astronomy Considered to be one of the greatest scientists of all time

Scientific Achievements Chemistry Discovery! – Air is a mixture of gases Astronomy Discovery! – Johann Kepler – planets follow an elliptical orbit around the sun Medical Achievements! – Vesalius – book on human anatomy from examining dead humans – Harvey – the heart pumps blood through your body

Results of the Scientific Revolution Caused others to question what had been taught in the past Application of the Scientific Method to other areas of learning

Church and Science - Face Off! Church’s Beliefs Believed in a Geocentric solar system (Earth is at the center) Based all beliefs on scriptures and ancient teachings Believed scientific findings which did not support the Church where heresy (against the Church’s beliefs) – Tried scientists who refused to “take back” their findings. Scientific Findings Believed in a Heliocentric solar system (the sun is at the center) Used Scientific Method, reasoning, and experimentation to prove theories Wished to discover answers to questions regarding ancient teachings

Church and Science – Face off! Turn and talk to your table mates regarding the following questions… – How is the Scientific Revolution related to the Reformation? – Why do you think the Church fought against the Scientific Revolution and it’s progress? – How would you portray (describe) the Church during the Scientific Revolution? – Give explanation for each side’s point of view- the Church and Scientists. Following your discussion, create a 1 sentence response to each question in the space provided on your guided notes.

RAFT Activity- Wanted Poster Required Materials- 1 sheet of copy paper, coloring and writing utensils Activity- Imagine you are a leader in the Catholic Church and have created a wanted poster (advertisement) for one of the scientist in the notes. Your wanted poster should include – A picture of the scientist, his experiments, or his beliefs – A 1 paragraph (4-5 sentence) summary of what the scientist discovered and why he should be brought to trial by the Church Answer the following questions in your paragraph – What made the Church see these scientists as radicals? Why were their thoughts a problem for the Church? – Your poster should take up the entire paper, be neat, creative and well written! When you are done, glue in your wanted poster after your guided notes titled The Scientific Revolution.
