The spirit of the Renaissance encouraged curiosity, investigation and the practical application of the knowledge of nature to everyday life.
People became more willing to question old ideas and beliefs.
They were more willing to use new approaches to answer questions about the natural world.
They would no longer explain the world in terms of religious thought or magic.

5. Scientific method- scientists did experiments and used math to check and apply their measurements. They would repeat experiments to be sure and get the same results. Then they would draw conclusions about what they observed.
This was a new process and one that would become standard to scientists throughout the world.

COPERNICUS
Proposed the heliocentric model – the earth revolves around the sun
This went against the teachings of Aristotle who wrote about the geocentric model
Since the church accepted Aristotle’s teachings that supported the creation view of the earth being at the center, Copernicus’ teachings went against the Church

COPERNICUS
Because he was afraid of being punished by the Church he didn’t publish his book on the heliocentric model until right before he died

GALILEO
Continued the work of Copernicus
He created the telescope to be able to observe and study the planets
His observations proved the Copernican heliocentric theory
Published a book in 1610 with his findings

GALILEO
He wasn’t as afraid of the Church as Copernicus because by then the Church was already challenged by the Protestant Reformation – but he was wrong!!!
The Church did not accept his findings and challenged their truthfulness
They ordered him to take back what he said and to stop doing his experiments or he would be tortured and killed

Isaac Newton –
built on the work of Copernicus and Galileo
used mathematics to describe gravity as the force that keeps planets revolving around the sun. 
also explained that this same force is what causes objects to fall to earth.
