Eight Themes of Social Studies Flip Book Directions

Make a page in your flip book for the Eight Themes of Social Studies. Each page must include: Meaning of the theme Examples Write and answer the essential question A colored illustration.

1. Conflict and Change—when there is conflict between or within societies, change is the result. Examples: Civil War and the end of slavery, September 11th and the change in airport security Essential Question: When you have a conflict with your friends does it change your friendship? If so, how? Illustration

2. Culture—The culture of a society is the product of the religion, beliefs, customs, traditions, and government of that society. Examples: language, clothing, food, religion, sports Essential Question: How do you describe your family’s culture? Illustration

3.Governance—As a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of the government also increases. Example: rules for NFL vs. Peewee football, the government for 13 colonies vs. government of US today Essential Question: How has school gotten more complicated as you have gotten older? Illustration

4. Human-Environment Interaction—Humans, their society, and the environment affect each other. Examples: destruction of rainforest, pollution (negative) Planting trees, recycling (positive) Essential Question: What are the positive and negative consequences of human environment interaction? Illustration

  5. Movement/Migration—The movement or migration of people and ideas affects all societies involved. Examples: colonization, the Cherokee Indians (Trail of Tears) Essential Question: What are cultural differences within different regions of the United States? Illustration

6. Location—Location affects a society’s economy, culture, and development. Examples: latitude and longitude, address (absolute) Near the equator (relative) Essential Question: Why do people eat different foods or wear different clothes in different parts of the world? Illustration

7. Production, distribution, and consumption- The production, distribution, and consumption of goods/services produced by the society are affected by the location, customs, beliefs, and laws of that society. Examples: raw material-secondary good-store-buying good in U.S. vs. Africa Essential Question: How does culture and location affect a country’s economy?   Illustration

  8. Time, Continuity, and Change—While change occurs over time, there is continuity to the basic structure of that society. Examples: family, laws, rules, going to school Essential Question: How have laws changed as you have gotten older? Illustration
