What will you notice about Year 3? Middle school….bridge to the senior school Differences? Desk…independence expectations…Standardised testing ….PAT maths test/Schonell spelling testing Homework book.. mathematics for some students Formal speech.. oral language E learning communication.. wiki page Home readers…not always every night…choice Reading to learn … greater emphasis on comprehension

Classroom Organisation There are 4 classes in the Year 3 syndicate Even mix of boys/girls in each class/ ability and personality Mrs Murray.. Specialist music classes Mrs Margaret Murray.. specialist art classes Mr. Mannion.. Specialist PE lessons Cross grouping for mathematics Each class timetable is slightly different depending on library, music and P/E times

Routines Classroom routines are established as quickly as possible Children are encouraged to be independent, unpack own bags, order their lunch, care for their belongings etc Children are encouraged to look after their own belongings, they move from a group table tray of stationery to looking after their own stationery and using a pencil case. Can stationery items please be labeled…even rubbers…glue sticks…extra pencils and glue sticks have been stored. Note large not small glue stick Book bags need to come to school daily

Timetable Each classroom timetable is different, however core subject areas such as reading, language, mathematics and spelling are all taught at the same time across the syndicate Timetables can often change weekly. The daily programme is displayed on the whiteboard Spelling is on a Monday and Friday

Oral language/Listening Your child will present a formal speech this year 2-3 minutes long. (Details will follow at the end of Term 2). You will have school holidays to get started. Speech writing will also be part of home learning. Children will present their speech in their home group and if they are selected they will go through to the semi finals and then the finals in the school hall with the Year 4 finalists. There is a Y4 and Y3 speech winner Children are encouraged to speak with clarity, confidence, expression and in a logical sequence. Opportunities in the classroom for speaking - class news, buzz groups, current events

Written Language Children are grouped according to abilities In year 3 it is our expectation that written language should be legible, accurate and set out effectively Variety of written language topics will be covered Here is a good example of the Year 3 standard of writing

Reading Support your child by listening to them read each night and question them about their reading Children are ability grouped and progress monitored and recorded Home readers need to be returned the next day Many home readers at higher levels are not taken home. On these occasions children can either choose from a group box in the classroom or start reading small chapter books.

Year 3 Landscape Learning Term One – All about Me! - Keeping Ourselves Safe (Major Focus)

Mathematics: Numeracy Stages There are 8 Stages which cover Strategy and Knowledge Expectation that at the end of Year 3 that children will be working at Stage 5 (Level 2 of the National Curriculum) Children will be grouped according to their numeracy stage and work in groups National Standard reports indicate what numeracy stage your child is on Some students will be required to purchase the Mathematics home learning book – strategy level 4/5 Other students will receive a Basic Facts/Knowledge handout weekly to help your child’s mathematical ability

Knowledge is where you as the parents and caregivers can help

Maths Website For more information and activities to do at home visit Go to the family section

E Learning What is this? Learning using technology available.. less emphasis on book work.. learning each year is faster and fluid.. knowledge can change…your child will need the confidence to use these tools.. Role: facilitators not the masters… Incorporated into all subject areas…. Wiki pages are currently being set up and your child’s teacher will send home instructions on how this works. Your child will experience many new E-Learning activities this year … photostory, google maps, wiki pages, padlet, fotobabble, prezi Learning how to be a responsible digital citizen

Home Learning Home learning mathematics pages go home on Friday. If your child is away – check your class wiki page Home learning is to be returned the following Thursday/Friday – ask your teacher Home reading is part of home learning Spelling is part of home learning Weekly poem is part of home reading Formal spelling – Monday and Friday. On Monday weekly words will go home and on Friday the weekly words are tested, notebooks will stay at school on Friday A note will be sent home if there is no homework. Parents, please check your child’s mathematics home learning together before returning it to school on Thursday. Research has shown the most effective and beneficial homework=working together with your child. NOT totally independent.
