 Hamilton:  Supported manufacturing  Wants strong central government  Believed wealth and educated should lead government  Loose interpretation of Constitution  Favored National Bank  Favored protective tariff  Pro-British  Jefferson:  Supported farming  People should have power  Favored state government  Favored strict interpretation of Constitution  Pro-French  Opposed Nation Bank  Opposed protective tariff

 Small farmers, artisans and some wealthy plantation owner support Jefferson’s Democratic Republicans.  Merchants and manufactures from New York and Boston support Federalists.  Federalists want strong central government  Newspapers take sides:  Great influence on Americans because people opinion influenced by language in editorials.  Emotional attacks created party rivalry.

 Political Parties played major role in election of Washington’s successor  Demo-Republicans supported Jefferson, with Aaron Burr for Vice President  Federalists support John Adams and Thomas Pinckney for VP  Electoral Votes decide, but based on highest totals for each person.  Adams is President and Jefferson next highest vote, so he is VP.
