Federalists Democratic-Republicans Led by Alexander Hamilton & John Adams Believed wealthy & well educated should lead nation Strong Federal govt. Manufacturing Pro-Britain Loose interpretation of Const Led by Thomas Jefferson & James Madison Believed the people should have the power Strong state govt. Agriculture Pro-France Strict interpretation of Const.

3 Conflict in the Executive Branch
Alien & Sedition Acts: Passed by Federalist controlled Congress/President President could kick out any immigrant thought to be dangerous Made it harder for immigrants to become citizens (many immigrants supported Republicans) Citizens could be fined/jailed for criticizing the govt.

4 Conflict in the Executive Branch
● Jefferson helped states declare the Alien & Sedition Acts “unconstitutional” ● The Acts were changed or dropped within a few years

5 Election of 1800 Tie between Jefferson & Aaron Burr (both Republicans)
4 days & 36 votes in House of Representatives Jefferson elected President with Burr as Vice-Pres

6 Death of the Federalist Party
