Faction – an organized political group Not a favorable term Washington was against factions, yet they started in his cabinet Jefferson’s Republican Party versus Hamilton’s Federalist Party Although Washington did not believe in political parties, he supported many of Hamilton’s views

3 Jefferson & the Democratic-Republicans
Believed common people should have the power Favored strong state governments Emphasized the importance of agriculture as the driving economic force in the nation Favored a STRICT interpretation of the Constitution Opposed to a national bank and a protective tariff

4 Hamilton & the Federalists
Believed a wealthy and educated elite should run the government Favored a strong central government Emphasized the importance of manufacturing, shipping and trade as the backbone of the economy Favored a loose interpretation of the Constitution Favored a national bank and a protective tariff

5 The Election of 1796 Remember: no term limits yet!
Washington decides to step down after two terms Republican Candidate: Thomas Jefferson Federalist Candidate: John Adams Outcome: Adams finished first and Jefferson second Adams = 2nd President Jefferson = Vice President
