2/19/2009 [5 min] Vegetarianism is the belief that one should only eat fruits and vegetables and not eat any meat. What is your opinion of vegetarianism? Why do you have this opinion? Would you ever personally stop eating meat (or, start eating meat, if you already are a vegetarian)? Explain your answer. Timer

Today… I’ll be reviewing what we covered yesterday, in case you were absent. I’ll be going over the new standards for today. – Multiple sources – Organizational Patterns You will be reading the articles BY YOURSELF—working independently is a very important skill that we only have two weeks to master. I’ll put on some music while you work. You may listen to your ipod. You’ll be answering questions at the end. Questions?

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Day 2 Review Setting: where/when the story takes place. – Post-apocalyptic dystopia: the setting occurs after a war/nuclear event; humanity is completely or nearly destroyed. POV: Point of view; who (narrator) is telling the story – 1 st person: uses “I” – 3 rd person: uses “he” or “she” Theme: the main message of the story (similar to moral, but not specific to children).

Plot Elements, Day 3: Multiple Sources + Org. Patterns Multiple source questions: you read 2 articles; they ask questions about both of them. Organizational patterns: 1.Chronological 2.Cause and Effect 3.Problem, Solution 4.Flashback 5.Argument, Support

Before we start… Short response: require ¼ page to answer; 2 supporting details

Before we start… Extended response questions: require ½-1 page to answer; 4 supporting details

Let’s Read I’ll put the music on…you get to work! Questions for the two vegetarian articles will be put up in a moment. Any questions?

Questions on separate paper Remember: DETAILS = higher grade Answer the following questions in extended response format (1/2-1 page) 1.In the “Why I stopped being a vegetarian” article, do you think the author is for or against vegetarianism? Use specific examples to support your claim. 2.In the “Why I stopped being a vegetarian” article, the author makes use of humor to get her point across. Do you think her humor helps or hurts her when she makes her case? Explain your answer and give specific examples from the text. 3.In the “A vegetarian philosophy” article, do you think the author is for or against vegetarianism? Use specific examples to support your claim. 4.In the “A vegetarian philosophy” article, the author claims we should “boycott all meat.” If you agree with the author, how can you convince others to agree with you? If you disagree, how do you counter the author’s argument? Explain your answer and use specific examples.
