5. Purpose of JGHG 1.The purpose of this novel is to deepen your understanding of everything we’ve covered in this class: – Freytag, Characterization, Setting, POV, Theme, Irony, Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, Main Idea, etc. 2.To get to finish a novel—what a reward!

6. Types of Activities We are not going to spend all of our time silent/popcorn reading—we’ll be doing: – Stop and talk – Stop and write – Written conversations – Star cards – Projects – Using those new laptops

7. The Two Slide Review/Preview Every time we read JGHG, right before we start, I’ll show you a two-slide review/preview. – One slide will be a review of what happened the last time we read. Taking notes on this slide is OPTIONAL. – One slide will be a preview of what will happen today. Take notes on this slide— doing so will be a great way for you to review for quizzes/tests.

8. Review Chapter 1 – Joe hears a phone ringing. Remembers his father dying. Comes out of his dream, realizes that he can no longer hear. Remembers his father and mother before they were married.

9. Preview Chapter 3 – Joe’s left arm is chopped off—then remembers the wedding ring on it. Flashback’s to his last night with Kareen (girlfriend) before the war. He loses both of his arms. Chapter 2 – Joe’s relationship with his father and mother pre-war. Joe regrets going to war. Chapter 4 – Joe’s first job as a railroad worker. Joe and his friend Howie are there because of breakups with their girlfriends. They return home in Joe’s flashblack—he awakes and cries.
