4 The main idea of a story is what the story is mostly about.

5 Cause and Effect A cause is something that makes something else happen. An effect is what happens. The cause is the girl swings the club and hits the ball. The effect is the ball moves.

6 The order that events take place is called Sequence. Words like first, next and last help readers figure out the order of events. Good readers pay attention to the order in which things happen. First put the meat and cheese on the bread. Next close the sandwich. Last eat the sandwich.

7 The reason an author writes a story is called Author’s Purpose. Authors may write to be funny or to entertain readers. Authors may write to explain something or give information.

9 To compare and means to tell ways in which things are alike and different.

10 You can compare and animals, characters, stories, pictures and much more.

11 Let’s answer some questions to see ways in which our stories were alike and different!

12 Which stories had photographs for the pictures?

13 Which stories taught you about real animals that are alive today?

14 Which story used a school for the setting of the story?

15 Which story had talking animals?

16 Which stories had an author?

17 Which stories had a problem that had to be solved?
