 ACTIVITIES – EXPLORED THE ATLANTIC COAST OF NORTH AMERICA  ESTABLISHED PERMANENT SETTLEMENT ON THE EAST COAST OF NORTH ON THE EAST COAST OF NORTH AMERICA NAMING THEM VIRGINIA AND AMERICA NAMING THEM VIRGINIA AND NEW ENGLAND NEW ENGLAND   ACCOMPLISHMENTS – BROUGHT THE ENGLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE, PROTESTANT RELIGIONS, AND IDEAS ABOUT SELF-GOVERNMENT IDEAS ABOUT SELF-GOVERNMENT

 SPAIN, FRANCE, AND ENGLAND ATTEMPTED TO SETTLE AND COLONIZE SOUTH CAROLINA AS PART OF THE COMPETITION FOR COLONIES THAT WOULD ENRICH THE MOTHER COUNTRY.  HERNANDO DE SOTO – LED A SPANISH EXPEDITION THROUGH SOUTH CAROLINA IN 1540 LOOKING FOR GOLD.

 SAN MIGUEL DE GUALDAPE – SPANISH SETTLEMENT ESTABLISHED IN THE 1520’S ON THE WACCAMAW RIVER NEAR GEORGETOWN. IT WAS ABANDONED DUE TO THE LOSS OF SUPPLIES, AFRICAN SLAVE REBELLION, INDIAN ATTACKS

 THE FRENCH ESTABLISHED CHARLESFORT NEAR BEAUFORT BUT ABANDONED IT IN THE 1560S DUE TO LACK OF SUPPORT FROM THE MOTHER COUNTRY

 THE SPANISH RETURNED TO ESTABLISH SAN FELIPE UNTIL IT WAS ATTACKED BY NATIVE AMERICANS. THE SURVIVORS FLED TO SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA FINALLY THE ENGLISH ESTABLISHED THE FIRST PERMANENT COLONY IN SOUTH CAROLINA, CHARLES TOWNE, IN 1670

 THE ENGLISH COLONIES  JAMESTOWNE FIRST PERMANENT ENGLISH COLONY –TOBACCO  MADE THE SETTLEMENT SUSTAINABLE.  THE HEADRIGHT SYSTEM ATTRACTED MORE SETTLERS BY PROMISING LAND TO THOSE WHO PAID THEIR WAY OR SOMEONE ELSES WAY TO AMERICA. THIS LED TO THE BEGINNINGS OF LARGE TOBACCO PLANTATIONS AND CONFLICT WITH NATIVE AMERICANS AS SETTLERS TOOK OVER MORE OF THEIR LAND.

 INDENTURED SERVANTS - POOR PEOPLE WHO AGREED TO SERVE A LANDOWNER IN EXCHANGE FOR PASSAGE TO AMERICA. THESE WERE AN EARLY SOURCE OF LABOR IN THE JAMESTOWN COLONY  THE JAMESTOWN SETTLERS SOON TURNED TO A MORE RELIABLE SOURCE OF LABOR – AFRICAN SLAVES  HOUSE OF BURGESSES - A LEGISLATIVE BODY IN JAMESTOWN THAT GAVE THE SETTLERS A VOICE IN GOVERNING THE COLONY

 NEW ENGLAND  FOUNDED AS A HAVEN FOR RELIGIOUS GROUPS PERSECUTED IN ENGLAND  SEPARATIST(PILGRIMS) LANDED AT PLYMOUTH, MA.  MAYFLOWER CONTRACT REENFORCED THE IDEA THAT THE PEOPLE FORM THE GOVERNMENT  NATIVE AMERICANS HELPED THEM LEARN TO PLANT CORN ENABLING THEM TO SURVIVE

 NEW ENGLAND ECONOMY: LUMBER, SHIPBUILDING AND TRADE ECONOMY: LUMBER, SHIPBUILDING AND TRADE RELIGION: NO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, EVERYONE WAS EXPECTED TO FOLLOW THE RELIGION OF THE PURITANS RELIGION: NO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, EVERYONE WAS EXPECTED TO FOLLOW THE RELIGION OF THE PURITANS SCHOOLS WERE SET UP TO TEACH CHILDREN TO READ THE BIBLE SCHOOLS WERE SET UP TO TEACH CHILDREN TO READ THE BIBLE THOSE WHO DISAGREED DISSENTERS WERE EXILED. THOSE WHO DISAGREED DISSENTERS WERE EXILED. GOVERNMENT: VERY GOVERNMENT: VERY DEMOCRATIC DEMOCRATIC

 SOUTHERN COLONIES (SOUTH CAROLINA)  SC WAS ESTABLISHED AS A PROPRIETARY COLONY.  EIGHT LORD’S PROPRIETORS WERE GRANTED CAROLINA BY KING CHARLES II AS PAYMENT FOR A DEBT.   FUNDAMENTAL CONSTITUTION OF CAROLINA - PROMISED RELIGIOUS TOLERATION TO ATTRACT SETTLERS.  IT ALSO SET UP A SOCIAL CLASSES WHERE  TITLES WOULD BE GRANTED TO LARGE LANDOWNERS. –  THERE WAS NO IDEA OF THE EQUALITY OF MAN.

 THE HEADRIGHT SYSTEM WAS ALSO USED TO ATTRACT SETTLERS TO SC WHICH LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE PLANTATIONS   THE FIRST ENGLISH SETTLERS IN SC CAME FROM BARBADOS WHERE THEY ALREADY HAD A SLAVE SYSTEM SET UP.  SLAVERY MADE THE PLANTATION OWNERS VERY WEALTHY

 ECONOMY: PROSPERITY THROUGH CASH CROPS GROWN ON PLANTATIONS (MADE POSSIBLE DUE TO THE FERTILE SOIL, MILD CLIMATE AND WATERWAYS IN THE SOUTH)   RELIGION – RELIGIOUS FREEDOM - THIS LED MANY GROUPS (FRENCH, GERMANS, IRISH, JEWS) TO COME TO SC IN LARGE NUMBERS.

 GOVERNMENT: IN SC WE HAD A COUNCIL OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PROPRIETORS, THE CAROLINA ELITE (LARGE LANDOWNERS), AND THE COMMON PEOPLE  (YOU HAD TO OWN LAND TO VOTE OR HOLD OFFICE
