2 New England Colonies Founded as a haven for Religious Groups
persecuted in England A. The Separatists [Pilgrims] landed at Plymouth after signing the Mayflower Compact B. Larger migration of Puritans landed in the Massachusetts Bay 2. Formed American Democracy – the idea that the people form the government A. All male church members could vote 3. Economy - Learned to plant corn from Native Americans and sustained themselves Later harvested lumber, ship building, and engaging in trade New Englanders enjoyed religious homogeneity, a thriving economy based on trade, and a democratic government

3 Middle Colonies Founded by many Europeans:
Dutch settled New York Swedes settled Delaware English Quakers settled Pennsylvania 2. Quakers promoted religious tolerance and good relations with the natives A. Colony attracted many groups of people B. Greatest diversity of people and religions in British North America 3. King Charles II granted William Penn land A. Penn had the rights of a proprietor B. Pennsylvania also had a representative assembly Founded for the purpose of profit, this region’s economic prosperity rested on its good harbors and fertile fields. It became known as the ‘breadbasket’ of the colonies.

4 Southern Colonies 1. Jamestown (Virginia)- First Permanent English Settlement in the New World A. Established by a joint stock company B. Settlers endured several years of starvation and death C. Tobacco made the settlement sustainable To attract more settlers, the London Company initiated the HEADRIGHT SYSTEM - Provided land to anyone who paid their own passage or the passage of others to the settlement D. Established Large Plantations 1. Took land from Native Americans 2. Used Indentured Servants (brought over through the Headright System) 3. Later used Slave Labor (African Slaves – more reliable source of labor) 2. Established the House of Burgesses A. Settlers had a voice in the governance of the colony

5 Colonial South Carolina
Founded as a Proprietary Colony A. King Charles II granted land to the Eight Lords Proprietors B. Repayment of debts incurred in reclaiming throne 2. John Locke wrote the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina Included policies: a. Religious Toleration (Designed to attract settlers) b. Provisions to Establish a Social Class System c. Granted Titles to Large Landholders 3. Headright System (same as in Virginia) A. Established large plantations based on cash crops B. Slave System (learned in Barbados) Natural Resources - fertile land, a mild climate, and many waterways - contributed to the development plantations and prosperity here
