Welcome to Curriculum Night  My background & experience  Looking forward to a successful year with your child.  Your child’s success depends on support at school and at home.

Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS)  Curriculum is based on TEKS that were developed by the state of Texas.  Bang Elementary Kindergarten Curriculum addresses the TEKS throughout the day

Language: Print Concepts  Find the front of the book.  Where do I start to read?  Which way do I go when I read? (left to right)  Where do I go when I get to the end of a line? (return sweep)  Point to the words while I read. (one-to-one matching)  Frame a sentence.

Language: Print Concepts (continued)  Where does the sentence start and end?  Know what a period is for. (end of that sentence or thought)  Frame a word. Frame two words.  Frame a letter. Frame two letters.  Frame the first and last letter in a word.  Frame a capital letter.

Language: Reading  Beginning - - track each word - - later pull finger away for fluency  Use letter sounds to help read (get mouth ready)  Use picture clues  Find a part you know (sh)

Language: Alphabet  Identify all capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet and give their sounds. (give the sound with the lowercase letter)  a - - g

Language: High Frequency Words  35 sight words - - attached flashcards  Say them quickly  Find them in stories and books  Spell them

Language: Writing  Write first and last name on a baseline (capital and lowercase letters)  Far-point copying  Near-point copying  Writing level needs to be a 2 by the end of the year

Writing Levels Stages of Writing / Spelling Development  Stage 0 – Experimenting – scribbling  Stage 1 – Emerging – letter strings  Stage 2 – Developing – phonetic spelling  Stage 3 – Capable – more detailed  Stage 4 – Fluent – 1 st grade

Math:  Calendar (identify day, month, year)  Sort by shape, size, color, or any other attributes  Counting activities with use of concrete objects  Count by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100  Identify numerals 1-30  Recognize, identify, and create patterns  Simple addition and subtraction with concrete objects

Technology

Social Studies (in Developmental Centers)  Chronology  Location  People and customs  Citizenship

Science (in Developmental Centers)  Living and non-living  Patterns and events in environment  Use scientific tools to gather data  Use senses to classify and record observations
