3 Thank You! Upcoming Events
PT Conferences I am looking forward to meeting with each of you this week. If you need a conference time reminder please let me know! Conferences will be held in our classroom with the adults. Students and siblings are welcome to wait in the hallway working on coloring or reading. These will be quick 15 minute conversations so we ask that you are on-time and I will have to set a timer for myself  I like to start with your comments and concerns first. Thank You! I’d like to say thank you for all of the donations and time spent in our classroom already this year. You are a fabulous group of parents to work with and I appreciate your care and effort for your student’s success and learning! Upcoming Events November 7th, 8th- Parent Teacher Conference, by appointment November 9th- NO SCHOOL November 16th- Picture Retake Day November 21st- Half Day Turkey Trot (more info to come) November 22nd, 23rd- NO SCHOOL November 28th- Early Release Volunteers We will begin having volunteers this month. Volunteers are welcome to come in 9-9:45 Monday-Thursday. During this time you will be working on materials for the class and then are welcome to read a story to the class either brought in by you or chosen from our class. If you have another time that best suits when you can come in please let me know and we can work out a schedule or time frame! We do need to confirm with one another before you come in so I can notify the office to expect you.

4 This month we will be working on past present and future.
Handwriting By the end of November we will have learned how to form each letter. December will be all about repetition and review of letter formation. When working at home with your student, keep in mind we always start our writing (number and letter) from the top. We never want to pushup from the bottom unless we are tracing back up the line for letters like m and n. Sight Words By the end of November we will be up to 15 sight words. Students are reading and writing these daily. These words are words that show up frequently in age appropriate reading books and simple sentences we are learning to write. The understanding of these words is extremely helpful for their success in reading and writing throughout the day. Please practice this at home in fun new ways along with the flashcards  Social Studies This month we will be working on past present and future. Students will be asked to bring something from home to show them in the past, present and future to share with the class. This information will be coming home closer to the activity date. Flashcards Each student should have a few sets of flashcards to work with at home. These are to stay at home and be worked on regularly each week. They have letters (upper and lowercase) numbers and sight words. It is important to be practicing these skills regularly because we will be building on these basic skills to read and write in length. Students who have not mastered these basic rote skills begin to struggle as we move on throughout the school year. If you would like an extra set of any of these please do not hesitate to ask! We can give you a set to leave in the car for traveling, one for mom’s, one for dad’s or anywhere else you would like to squeeze this at least weekly practice in.

5 Phonics/Letter Work Reading Math Writing
We are focusing on retelling a story in different ways. We can act it out, tell a friend about a book or read it using a storytellers voice. Each of these strategies works on comprehension and understanding of the story being read. During this time students are being asked to think deeper about their characters and reason with their actions. Students are still building on their ability to converse with classmates on age appropriate topics. In small groups we are continuing to work on reading the words in books and holding ourselves accountable by pointing to each word as we read it. This is a very important time for students to be catching on to their sight words and using them in context. It helps with their reading fluency and comprehension. Math Your students have worked so hard at reading writing and counting numbers 0-5. We are continuing learning to read write and count number up to 10 this month. While doing that we are also working in patterns (ABAB, ABBABBA, ABCABC) and sorting. When sorting we are looking for how things are alike and different. Size, shape, color, amounts and more attributes. Sorting and classifying will be an overlaying topic this month throughout the curriculum. Phonics/Letter Work By the end of November we will have learned each letter, sound and how to write it! This has been hard work for us so let them show you what they know! We will continue working on rhyming and first and last sounds we hear in words. It is important for students to know how to read and write all 26 letters in order to help them throughout the day. Writing We have wrapped up small moments/narratives for the time being and begun a more scientific approach to writing. We are working on closely observing an object, sketching it just as it is and then labeling it. As we list and label things we are really working on sounding out words, one at a time. In this writing process, we say a word slowly and keep repeating it as we write down the letters we hear in the order we hear it in. Ask your student to stretch it out like a piece of bubble um from their mouth!
