4 th Project Steering Committee Meeting 21 February 2008 Leibniz Institut für Meereswissenschaften IfM-GEOMAR Kiel Deutschland Grosser Konferenzraum

INCOFISH Workpackage 2 Shifting Baselines  Historical dimension of INCOFISH  Overarching aim is to examine the patterns of long-term change in selected coastal ecosystems and thereby establish targets for the restoration and sustainable use of living marine resources

INCOFISH Workpackage 2 Partners CodePartnerLocation CEFASCentre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science Lowestoft, UK CDFCharles Darwin FoundationGalapagos Islands, Ecuador IMARPEInstituto de Mar del PerúLima, Peru MEIEstonian Marine InstituteUniversity of Tartu Tallinn, Estonia RUCRoskilde UniversityRoskilde, Denmark UHULLMHSC, University of HullHull, UK UNALNational University of ColombiaSanta Marta, Colombia UNIABDNUniversity of AberdeenAberdeen, UK

INCOFISH Workpackage 2 Since 3 rd Project Steering Meeting  Galapagos Workshop  Two Mini-Workshops:  La Paz, Mexico  Hull, UK  Data collection and collation - Datasets  Supporting documentation - Historical Integrity  Publications  Research and preparation of a High Impact Paper

INCOFISH Workpackage 2 Workshop Reports   March 2007:  Mini-Workshop, La Paz, Mexico  July 2007:  Workpackage 2 Workshop 2.2, Galapagos, Ecuador  October 2007:  Mini-Workshop, Hull, UK

Aims & Outcomes  Forthcoming Galapagos Workshop  Project Leader emphasised Shifting Baselines aspect of WP2  UNAL Colombia progress report  “Highlights” discussed  Species Distribution  Size of Key Species  Abundance of Key Species  UNIABN, UNAL, IMARPE, RUC to develop relevant “Backflash” files based on research Work Package 2 Shifting Baselines La Paz, Mexico Mini-Workshop March 2007

Workshop Aims  As the second milestone of the ‘Shifting Baselines’ Workpackage of the INCOFISH programme, workshop 2 was identified as a platform for realising three aims:  to synthesise research findings and thereby establish baselines against which the current status of selected marine ecosystems can be assessed;  to foster interaction with other INCOFISH Workpackages, especially WP1 and WP3;  to organise the dissemination of findings via publications, reports and the INCOFISH website. Work Package 2 Shifting Baselines Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Workshop 2 July 2007

Workshop Outcomes (1)  All of the delegates participated in the proceedings which required interactive involvement.  Based upon the presentations and discussions regarding each partner institution’s research and activities, Workpackage 2 was deemed to be on track to meet the remaining deliverables as scheduled.  UNAL, the Colombian partners, were unable to send a delegate due to unforeseen difficulties with travel arrangements. However, UNAL provided a detailed, annotated presentation which was presented on their behalf to the attending delegates. Work Package 2 Shifting Baselines Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Workshop 2 July 2007

Workshop Outcomes (2)  Jointly developed WP1/WP2 Online Search Tool prototype unveiled; the Online Search Tool will be released within the overall INCOFISH website for dissemination upon final verification of datasets  The presentation and practical application of a GIS mapping tools mini-workshop, presented by Jonathan Ready of WP3 was well received and provided partners with a practical means of presenting, annotating and formulating collected data in a visual format. It was agreed that this methodology would be a useful and applicable tool for future and current usage. Work Package 2 Shifting Baselines Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Workshop 2 July 2007

Workshop Outcomes (3)  Agreement was reached that three approaches would be made to determine the established baselines of the project:  Common representation of fishing activities following an expansion/exploitation/decline curve that could be synthesised into a single indicator;  Application of a “ratchet” type of gearing to a species decline model in order to provide a common means of assessing fisheries management;  A combination of these approaches Work Package 2 Shifting Baselines Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Workshop 2 July 2007

Workshop Outcomes (4)  One or more of the established baselines approaches will result in a high impact paper that will provide the dissemination of the joint Workpackage 2 outputs.  The possibility of a later mini-workshop (based in Hull, UK), was discussed- based upon the submission of established baseline conceptual approach information from participating partners  Sightseeing………….
