Development: Chapter 9 Measuring and Locating Development: KI#1 and #2

Think about the past 2 days: What does an MDC look like, compared to an LDC? What does feature is the best indicator of MDC vs. LDC? – Where can you draw the line? – What about trade surplus/deficit? Collect the HW

Characteristics of Development (LDC vs. MDC) Characteristic Per capita Income Wealth Dominate Industry (Sector) % in Agriculture Farming is …. Rural or Urban CBR ___. CDR ___. LE ___. Diet Diseases / medical Housing Education WomenLDC Low Uneven Primary High Subsistence by hand Rural High, High, Low Poor Infectious, poor Overcrowded, poor sanitation Poor with Illiteracy InferiorMDC High More even Secondary and Tertiary Low Commercial / mechanized Urban Low, Low, High Adequate to overeating Age and good Adequate, good sanitation Highly Developed Equal terms

Name that country – then decide if it is an MDC or an LDC

Conclusions Can you draw any conclusions about the location of MDCs or LDCs? (that way you don’t need to memorize EVERYTHING!)

What is this map attempting to show? Fig. 9-22: This north polar projection of the world shows that most of the MDCs are in a core area north of 30° N latitude. The LDCs are mostly on the periphery of this map. *Is there a reason for this?

More and Less Developed Regions More developed regions – Anglo-America–Western Europe – Eastern Europe–Japan – South Pacific Less developed regions – Latin America–East Asia – Southeast Asia–Middle East – South Asia–Sub-Saharan Africa

More and Less Developed Regions Fig. 9-8: The less developed regions include Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Why is this map important?
