Formation The Spanish in the 16th century were the first to settle in North Carolina The first permanent European settlers of North Carolina after the Spanish were English colonists Nathaniel Batts was documented as one of the first of these Virginian migrants

Formation In 1712, North Carolina became a separate colony King Charles II named it Carolina in honor of his father Charles I

Inhabitants Reasons why English colonists migrated south from Virginia: rapid growth of the colony the shortage of available farmland most were indentured servants
