STLP Program Scrapbook Advancing the individual capabilities of students; motivating all students; and creating leadership opportunities through the use of technology

 Prior to 2011, STLP was not a program offered to students at our school.  Our school participated in a school accreditation process. Upon review, we found that leadership opportunities for our students and student centered technology were our major weaknesses.  We researched many supports and found starting an STLP program met most all of our needs.  During the school year, we began an STLP program in which around 20 students joined. We had a small group to present a showcase project at state. We received a trophy for Top Twenty in the State!  We have grown to 80 students this school year.  We do encourage and allow any student who would like to be in STLP to be a member. Teachers have a rotation of these students in their classrooms to perform many of the leadership responsibilities on a daily basis.  We recently adopted the Leader In Me program and instructional materials

 Meet daily  Around 30 minutes before the first bell rings  Students from all grade levels 1-3  Practice math skills using website  Take AR tests over homework books  Students work with each other to log in, find website, start up computers, etc. Demonstrates STLP goals: 1, 3, 4

 Students of multi-age groups maintain a calendar for teachers to checkout 30 iPads  Students use this calendar to deliver and retrieve iPads  Students update the iPads and clean them  Students inventory iPads on a daily basis  Students add/delete iPad apps per teacher request  Students try out new iPad apps and informally evaluate them on user-friendliness and appeal Demonstrates STLP goals 1, 3, 4, 6

One librarian to more than 600 kids… we had to get creative!  Students can come in at any time during school hours and check in/check out books  Aides in school wide homework policy. Each student is to log 30 min of reading each night. This much reading requires higher circulation volumes.  Use scanner and website to check in/checkouthttp://simpsonkyschools.booksys.net  Students follow this procedure: Demonstrates STLP goals 1, 6

 STLP students use MacBooks, I Pads, and scanners to check in and checkout books to all age groups from 7:30-8:15  STLP students use Atriuum Cataloging system to find books on a particular subject for all age groups  STLP students use scanners, Macbooks, online book catalogs, and iPads to checkout books to teachers and fill teacher requested material orders Demonstrates STLP Goals: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

 Document Cameras-students use document cameras to teach others an academic skill  Students record themselves reading and then listen.  Students design and maintain a twitter service that promotes school events, parent reminders, and other announcements. Watch our video!

Veteran’s Day Program *STLP students coordinated and hosted the entire Veteran’s Day program. See attached program and scripts for more information. Blood Drive *STLP students helped set up the blood drive in our school gym

Our vision is to consider the technological world our students are living in, and keep pace. We feel this can only be accomplished by putting the most innovative technologies in their hands. With these devices, they need to solve problems, learn, and organize the world around them. We truly believe that the goals of the STLP program will help us realize that idea. So far, we have formally participated in the showcase events in which we have received high honors. We hope this year at state we come home with another “Best in Showcase from Regional Group ” trophy. On the other hand, the valuable impact we have made and the learning experiences we have had far exceed any material reward or recognition. Our future plans are to make other teachers in our school and district more aware of the benefits of this program, especially how it provides real-world application of important guides like common core and college and career readiness. This will be started at a professional development meet where teachers can discover the STLP website and all the many project opportunities. We also plan to share student testimonies expounding on what they have learned. Next year’s showcase project will be centered around improving the student to technology ratio. We want to explore devices such as Nooks, Kindles, and other technologies out there in the waiting and in the making that will further improve our efforts toward educating our 21 st Century learners.
