21 st century Teaching and Learning District Educator Deborah Harris EDU620: Meeting Individual Student Needs With Technology Instructor: Adriane Wheat December, 07 215

Station 1:Universal Design for Learning (UDL) In order to get the audience’s attention I would have a sign that says “Universal Design for Learning the learning for today. For more information please visit this station today to learn more!”To draw Community members to the station I will have brochures with information describing how UDL benefits the 21 st learners. The station will have fun activities to help parents, students, and community members learn facts about UDL and various examples of how classrooms will support all learners equally with UDL.I would ask question s so that everyone gets involves by allowing them to think about the topic. UDL is designed to benefit all students, including those with disabilities. While UDL may reduce the frequency of requests for special accommodations, we know that additional assistance may be required. I would explain that there would be many opportunities to provide specialized resources to students.

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) The primary purpose of UDL is to help diverse students have meaningful access to the curriculum and help all students equally achieve academic success. UDL is designed to help students with diverse cultures, intelligences, interests, aptitudes, and learning styles attain academic achievement UDL supports students with learning disabilities, students who are gifted, and students who are English Language Learners. UDL will include teaching strategies that teach students so that all students learn by hearing, seeing, applying, and Interacting UDL will minimize needs for modifications in the classroom because UDL accommodates and includes all learners since instruction, lessons, and teaching strategies that support all students UDL helps students learn with multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression.

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) To demonstrate UDL in action I would include a video of UDL being modeled, specifically one that shows the various ways UDL principles can be applied in the classroom Discuss the impact UDL has on teaching and learning for the specific population of PK through 12th grade students at the school district or adult learners at the community center. In your discussion, include how I would have a example that define appropriate goals that allow for multiple means of attainment, assess diverse learner needs, and evaluate barriers that may exist within the current curriculum.

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Attendees could interact in this station by interacting with teaching strategies that use technology to apply UDL principles. For example, instructors could demonstrate how technology such as I pad apps, e-readers, and websites and audiobooks.com are used in the classroom and teach reading and literacy and at the same time how UDL is supported by the various forms of technology. Attendees can also interact in this station in a question and answer session with the qualified teachers.

Station 2: Technology and UDL for All Learners Mission and Belief Statement: Every student will equally benefit from UDL instruction integrated with technology and will equally receive support to achieve academic success regardless of their unique individual differences. Goals: Teachers will attend weekly seminars on best strategies to apply UDL principles and technology to each and every lesson and content area of the curriculum in grades k-12 so that instruction is meaningful to all students of various aptitudes, interests, learning styles, intelligences, and cultures. In addition to integration of technology with each subject area, reading will be integrated with other subjects across the curriculum so that students develop strong reading skills.

Station 2: Technology and UDL for All Learners The school district’s courses should include Reading and Literacy Social Studies Computer Science Website Design Home Economics (cooking, baking, sewing) Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Sign Language) Mathematics with specializations in Computer Science, Engineering Math or Business Math Science with specializations in Meteorology, Botany, Marine Biology

Station 3: 21st-Century Skills Acquisition and Employability One specific course from the course offered list that integrates technology is: Mathematics with specialization area in computer science. 21 st century skills that students should gain as a result of participating in the course: 1} computer science is a universal skill which helps students learn global awareness. 2}Computer science helps students think critically through data analysis. And 3} career skills since many 21 st century careers require computer knowledge.

Station 3: 21st-Century Skills Acquisition and Employability Some tools that Include an additional example of a tech/digital tool s that are used in one or more courses could be to help the students would be: E-READERS COMPUTERS I-PAD APPS

Station 3: 21st-Century Skills Acquisition and Employability A great way to show the attendees examples of digital tools is to let them interact with some of the tools used in the classroom for instruction that supports technology. Attendees should be shown and encouraged to interact with the different I-pad apps used to support learning or reading and literacy, math, social studies, languages, etc. Also attendees can be shown the e-readers, interactive learning tables, and interactive e-books so that they can develop appreciation for technology and thus support technology for the school district.

Station 3: 21st-Century Skills Acquisition and Employability The schools in the school district will benefit from upgraded new technology from the approved bond because it has been proven that students’ motivation and academic progress has significantly increased ever since technology was integrated in the curriculum. However much of the technology that is being used will soon be outdated. Students in the school district would benefit from upgraded technology because they will learn real world applications of technology that they can transfer to college and the work place, however if they continue to learn with outdated technology the students will not be able to transfer their computer and digital skills to real world applications upon graduation. Therefore the school district is in great need of upgraded technology and as a concerned district educator it is my hope that the community votes in favor of the technology bond. Today we live in a technology and media-suffused environment with: 1) access to an abundance of information, 2) rapid changes in technology tools, and 3) the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. To be effective in the 21st century, citizens and workers must be able to create, evaluate, and effectively utilize information, media, and technology.
