First 6 Weeks of School The establishment of expectations and classroom routines are my primary focus for first six weeks. Getting to know your child and building classroom community is very important to me.

Lunch and Snacks Children have lunch in the Cafeteria from 12:15-12:40 Children are responsible for carrying their own money and making their own lunch choices We have snack at 10:00 everyday. We also have a snack time in the afternoon around 3pm for children who are hungry. It might be best to pack two snacks in the beginning of the year.

First Grade Homework Take-Home Reading Bags - Return when completed. Remember, it is okay to have your children reread the same books. Your child should read for at least 20 minutes each night. Sight Word Practice - Please practice and return when mastered. Your child should be able to read the words in a ‘snap’! Math Facts – Please practice and return when mastered. Your child should be able to solve in 3 seconds.

Conferences Wednesday, October 28 th and Thursday, October 29 th Please be sure to sign up If you would like a conference before then, let me know! Conferences will be scheduled in March as well (2 nd and 3 rd )

Volunteer Opportunities Writing Volunteers (5 people): To facilitate writing and conference with children Monthly Crafts (1-2 people): To plan and prepare themed crafts. Will be done once a month in the afternoon Library Organizer (1 person): To help level books, repair books and organize classroom library At home helpers / supplies (2 people): to make/create charts and/or activities or possibly purchase inexpensive supplies Please me if you are interested

Birthday Celebrations If you would like to bring one relatively healthy snack item to celebrate your child’s birthday, please send in a note/or me prior to notify me of your plans. 10:00am or 3:00pm would be the most appropriate times for a special birthday treat. You are welcome to stay and be a part of the celebration. NEEDS TO BE APPROVED by NURSE NANCY!

Reader’s Workshop authentic reading experiences that focus on the strengths and needs of each individual student mini-lesson, shared reading, read aloud, conferencing, independent reading, paired reading, and literature response basic philosophy - allow students to spend an extended amount of time reading authentic texts that interest them on a daily basis and to provide opportunities to talk about literature The ultimate goal of a Reading Workshop is always to develop life-long passionate readers

Writer’s Workshop students will write about their own lives, they will use a consistent writing process, they will work in authentic ways and it will foster independence. the teacher acts as a mentor author, modeling writing techniques and conferring with students as they move through the writing process. direct writing instruction takes place in the form of a mini-lesson, followed by an extended amount of active writing time. Each workshop ends with a sharing of student work.

Math Support students to make sense of mathematics and learn that they can be mathematical thinkers Focus on computational fluency (addition and subtraction up to 10) Provide substantive work in important areas of mathematics— rational numbers, geometry, measurement, data, and early algebra—and connections among them Emphasize reasoning about mathematical ideas Communicate mathematics content and pedagogy to teachers Engage the range of learners in understanding mathematics.
