Reading The reading curriculum will incorporate a Reading Workshop. During this time we will work on various strategies such as: making connections, questioning, inferring, monitoring comprehension, determining importance and summarizing. We will have units in fairytales, fantasy, multi- cultural tales, poetry, biographies, and more. The workshop will include lessons, mini lessons, reading, conferencing with the teacher, and sharing with others about their book through “book clubs”. Non-fiction reading will also be a big part of the workshop when the students can learn about current events and topics that they are interested in. DEAR will be a time when students are given the opportunity to read books of their choice. Reading logs will be a part of nightly homework.

Readers Workshop In our readers workshop students will have three rotations. DEAR CAFE Conferencing with the teacher or Book Clubs

Math Everyday Mathematics is a very well rounded program that is challenging, and fun for our students. It emphasizes establishing links from the past, sharing ideas, playing games and thinking about math in a different way. In third grade we will cover: adding and subtracting whole numbers, linear measures, area, multiplication, division, place value, geometry, fractions, measurement, data, and probability. Please Practice emgames at home!!!

Spelling At the beginning of the year I test and observe each child to see where they are in spelling. Every week each child will have a spelling list that is on their level and just right for them! Spelling lists will go home on Monday and Spelling tests will be on Fridays. Please Practice at home so they are ready for their test on Friday!

Social Studies In Social Studies we will have many fun games and projects. Students will even learn how to make their very own powerpoint presentation!

Social Studies Topics Jenks history Local community People in communities Government Inventions Economics Geography/Maps/Globes

Science Science will be a totally hands- on approach. We will study the following units: plants, rocks and minerals, and sound. During these units students will have the opportunity to grow plants, observe rocks and minerals, and make instruments.

Language Arts We will focus on the writing process, grammar and cursive handwriting. Students will have the opportunity to write many times during the day. They will write about things that are important to them. Writing will consist of a mini lesson, modeling, writing time, and time to share a writing piece in the author’s chair. Students will follow the writing process: collect and select, develop, plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish. Students will conference with me and others about their writing pieces.

Homework Homework is a very big part of 3 rd grade. Homework will reinforce what we do each day in class. Homework is a BIG part of their responsibility grade. Math home links will be given each night for homework. The students will also be expected to read a minimum of 100 minutes a week (20 minutes a school night). Agendas will come home each night.

Homework We will have “Study Hall” on Friday. This is a way our Pod rewards the students who have turned in all of their homework for the week. On Friday we have an extra 20 minute recess for the students who have completed all of their homework and done their reading minutes. The students who cannot participate in study hall will stay in with a teacher and work on unfinished work, homework, or read. We do not do this to “punish” the students who cannot go out, it is just an incentive and extra reward for the students who do their homework all week long.

Behavior As a School and Class we have 3 main expectations, to be Responsible, Safe, and Respectful at all times.

Class Newsletter Boleman Bulletin Every week a newsletter will be e-mailed or sent home to you. It will let you know what is going on in class! Please make sure I have your e-mail! As a site we are trying to go as paperless as possible. If you do not have access to e- mail and will need a hard copy, please let me know!

Volunteering This is a great way to be active in your child’s classroom. If you would be interested in volunteering one day a week for an hour or two, or if you would like to volunteer just one time, please let me know! I can always use an extra set of hands and put you to work on special projects, copying, decorating, working with students, etc.

Birthdays On your students birthday you are more than welcome to send a treat for the class, you are not required to do so though. If you do please send 26, so we have enough for each student! We will always sing happy birthday to your child and they will get a special birthday pencil or visor.
