6 Megacities as focal points of global sustainable development Expansion of Megacities is the primary and most far-reaching pattern of urbanization in developing- and threshold countries. 5 Megacities in 1975; an estimated 26 by the year More than 20 metropoles (annual growth rate of 3-4 %) rapidly approaching the threshold >>> tomorrow’s Megacities Megacities: focal points and pacesetters of economic globalization, social distortion and ecological change. Growing radiance on rural hinterland, on entire regions and economic zones, on increasingly globally tense supply- and value chains. Megacities = Arenas, in which decisions are made on the economical development, the social quality of life and the ecological sustainability of the world society.

7 Megacities as focal points of globally sustainable development 80% of the economic growth in threshold- and developing countries is generated in cities 2% of the earth’s surface is covered by cities 78% of all CO ² emissions are generated in cities 85% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gases are produced in cities 2.4 billion people in developing countries have no access to modern energy supply forms. Cities are at a turning point– they can either pursue business-as-usual- scenarios or seize the opportunity toward sustainable development, including energy- and climate-efficient structures.

8 Research, planning, development and implementation of solution- orientated and integrated innovation strategies and management concepts for future Megacities. Technical and non-technical innovations for the establishment of energy- and climate-efficient structures. Enable cities, their decision makers and inhabitants to increase the sphere and yield of efficiency in energy production, distribution and utilization. Showcase, that resource-consumption and greenhouse gas-emission by energy-using sectors can prospectively be reduced in terms of sustainability. Key goals of the BMBF research priority

9 Key guidelines of the BMBF research priority User-oriented, participatory approach: Project development in close cooperation with decision-makers and interest groups on-site. Multidimensional research themes oriented to specific demand areas: „prevention & therapy“ instead of mere „diagnosis“. Take sustainability seriously: postulate a coherent concept for the interaction of economical, social and ecological transformations. Long-term + graded promotion: 3 years set up phase, then 1 x 5 years main phase. Implementation of pilot measures.
