ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY

What Is a Short Story?  A short story is a short fictional prose narrative. Short stories generally contain –one or two major characters –one important setting –plot –suspense

What Is Plot?  Plot is the sequence of events that make up a story. Most plots are built from five elements— –exposition –rising action –climax –falling action –resolution

Exposition tells us who the characters are and what their conflict is. Introduces setting. Rising Action: the series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax. Climax: The turning point. The most intense moment (either mentally or in action. Falling Action: all of the action which follows the Climax. Resolution: The conclusion, the tying together of all of the threads.

Elements of Plot Exposition tells us who the characters are and what their conflict is. Rising Action occur as the characters take steps to deal with the conflict. Climax is the most exciting moment of the story, when the outcome must be decided one way or another. Falling Action the action which follows the climax. Resolution is the final part of the story, where the conflict is resolved.

Every story needs characters People Animals Or Creatures A character is a person or an animal in a story, a play, or another literary work.

The time and place of the story is the setting

The point of view is the perspective of the story “That rotten wolf tried to eat us!!!!” “I was framed! I just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar!”

P.O.V Point of view is the vantage point from which a story is told. How you understand a story is often based on the narrator (the person telling the story) and his or her point of view. The three most common points of view: –Omniscient –Third-person limited –First person

THEME Theme is the general idea or insight about life that a work of literature reveals. Some themes are recurring—they appear over and over again in works from different cultures. The theme is what the story means. The theme is an idea or message that the writer wishes to communicate about the subject. EX: One theme of “Cinderella” is that kindness will be rewarded.
