2 They begin in the author’s imagination and are called FICTION. SHORT STORIES: Usually revolves around a single idea and is short enough to read in one sitting NOVEL: Involves a more complicated plot and is a longer work

3 The sequence of events within a story usually built around the central conflict- a problem or struggle between two opposing forces Rising Action Occurs as the story continues. The conflict unfolds and suspense builds. Climax Turning point of the story. The outcome of the conflict is reached and a solution is found Exposition Sets the stage for the story. Characters and the setting are introduced. Falling Action The events that show the effects of the climax. Resolution Occurs at the conclusion of the story. Loose ends are tied up, and the story ends.

4 The people, animals, or imaginary creatures who take part in the action. The time and place in which the action of the story happens. Any short story can have multiple settings. Protagonist: The one character that the events are focused around. This character is involved in the conflict and usually changes throughout the story. Antagonist: The character that opposes the protagonist.

5 The struggle within a story. Internal Conflict A struggle within one's self; a person must make some decision, overcome pain, quiet their temper, resist an urge, etc. External Conflict A struggle with a force outside one's self. Person vs. Self The leading character struggles with himself with his own soul, ideas of right and wrong, physical limitations, or choices Person vs. Person The leading character struggles with his physical strength against other men or animals Person vs. Nature The leading character struggles against fate, or the circumstances of life facing him/her. Person vs. Society The leading character struggles against ideas, practices, or customs of other people.

6 The meaning, moral, or main message the writer wants to share with the reader. The theme might be a lesson in life. The theme is not stated directly in the story; the reader must figure it out by using details and events from the story. Universal Theme: One that is expressed in many cultures and time periods. Basic human values. Who is telling the story 1 st Person Told from the viewpoint of one of the characters in the story. Uses the pronoun I. 3 rd Person Limited Omniscient The narrator is not a character within the story The narrator tells us what one character thinks, feels, and observes 3 rd Person Omniscient The author is telling the story. He is able to tell the feelings of every character. 3 rd Person The narrator is not a character within the story. He uses the pronouns he, she, it, they, and them
