2 Fiction Writing that tells about characters and events from an author’s imagination

3 Elements of Fiction Setting: Time and Place Where the story occurs.
Plot: Events of the story Conflict: Struggle in the story. 3. Character: People or animals that take part in the story. Character traits(Qualities) can influence their thoughts, decisions and actions. 4. Theme: message about life that a story conveys.

4 Elements of Fiction Point of view: The perspective from which a story is told. _____ First person point of view: perspective of a character in the story(example: I raised my eyebrows and waited for a last name.) ______Third person point of view: perspective of a narrator outside of the story (example: Jade raised her eyebrows and waited for a last name.)

5 Types of Fictions Short stories: Brief works of fiction that usually focus on one main plot structured around one main conflict and can usually be read in one siting. Novels Longer works of fiction; contains the same elements as a short story but may contain subplots or independent, related stories and conflicts. Novellas: Shorter than novels but longer than short stories. Historical Fiction: Literature that draws, in part, on real people and events to tell invented stories.

8 Plot (definition) Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

9 2. Rising Action This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

10 3. Climax This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

11 1. Exposition This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

12 4. Falling Action All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

13 5. Resolution The story comes to a reasonable ending.
