Poetry Unit

Narrative Poem A poem that tells a story. They have special appeal. This type of poetry uses elements that are used in short stories like plot, characters, and dialogue. Some use repetition throughout the poem.

Rhyming The repetition of a sound in two or more words or phrases. “end rhymes”-the most common & occur at the end of a line. “exact rhymes”-words that sound similar, but the consonants at the beginning are different (cheese & peas) “half rhymes”-words with similar sounds, but not identical (pans & hams).

Repetition The use of a word or group of words more than once in a poem. Can create a music-like sound.

Rhythm The sound pattern created by combining stressed and unstressed syllables. The same general pattern continues throughout the poem.

Concrete Poem Poetry that is meant to be “seen” as well as heard. The words are arranged into a shape to look like the subject. Concrete refers to being specific and representing something.

Metaphor A comparison between two subjects, but not using the words “like” or “as.” Example: her eyes are twinkling stars.

Simile A comparison using the words “like” or “as.” Example:*he whistled like a bird. *It was as big as a house.

Personification A type of figurative language in which an a nonhuman object is given human characteristics. Example: the leaves danced in the wind.

Alliteration Repetition of beginning consonant sounds. She sells shells by the seashore.

Assonance Repetition of vowel sounds. The rain in Spain falls mainly in the plains.

Lyric Poem Expresses the poets thoughts and feelings in a musical language. Has different patterns of rhyme and rhythm. Most filled with energy. The lively words help you remember the poet’s thoughts and feelings.

Limerick A short, funny Irish poem of five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme. Lines 3 and 4 rhyme.

Onomatopoeia An echoic poem in which the sounds of the words used, suggests their meaning. Example: buzz went the bees.

Haiku A form that originated in Japan. Usually depicts a nature scene and has a strong feeling (fear, regret, hope, or mystery). The first and third line have five syllables. The second line has seven syllables. There should be a total of 17 syllables.

Nonsense These are fun to say and hear. These are usually rhyming poems. They have nonsense words like “hey diddle, diddle…”

Acrostic The name of the person, object, or place is written vertically down the left hand side of the page. Each letter is capitalized and becomes the first letter in the word beginning each line. The words used should describe the person, object, or place in a positive way.
