Ch. 1 Anatomical Terminology Sponge: Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 25 Topic: Ch. 1 Anatomical Terminology Essential Question: Write complete sentences correctly using each of the following terms: Superior, Inferior, Anterior, Posterior Don’t forget to add it to your T.O.Contents! Ch. 1 Anatomical Terminology 2.1 Atoms, Ions, and Molecules Write complete sentences correctly using each of the following terms: Superior, Inferior, Anterior, Posterior

Anatomical Terminology Anatomical Position – standing erect, facing forward, upper limbs at the sides, palms facing forward

Superior vs. Inferior Superior: Top. Or part that is above another part; closer to the head Ex: The Kidneys are superior to the bladder Inferior: Bottom. Or part that is below another part; toward the feet Ex: The bladder is inferior to the kidneys

Anterior vs. Posterior Anterior: Front Ex: The liver is anterior to the stomach Posterior: Back Ex: The stomach is posterior to the liver

Medial vs. Lateral Medial: Imaginary midline (middle) dividing the body into equal right and left halves Ex: The chest is medial to the arms Lateral: Side. Toward the right or left side of the midline. Ex: The arms are lateral to the chest

Types of Lateral Ipsilateral: Same side Ex: The appendix is ipsilateral to the gallbladder Contralateral: Opposite side Ex: The gallbladder is contralateral to the stomach

Proximal vs. Distal Proximal: Closer to the trunk of the body than another part Ex: The elbow is proximal to the wrist = The elbow is closer to the trunk than the wrist is Trunk Distal: Farther from the trunk of the body than another part. Ex: The fingers are distal to the wrist = The fingers are farther from the trunk than the wrist

Superficial vs. Peripheral Superficial: affecting or being situated near the surface Ex: The epidermis is superficial to the skin Peripheral: Being the surface or outer part of a body or organ; external Ex: The nerves that branch from the brain and spinal cord are peripheral nerves

Deep Deep: Describes the parts that are more deep Ex: The dermis is the deep layer of the skin

Body Sections

Sagittal: Lengthwise cut that divides the body into right and left portions

Transverse: Horizontal cut Transverse: Horizontal cut. Divides the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) portions

Coronal: Refers to a section that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions

1. 2. 3. Name the planes

Sagittal 1. Coronal 2. Transverse 3. Name the planes

Sagittal Coronal Transverse
