Self-Esteem

What do you think self-esteem is? Self-Esteem: A person’s overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth

Benefits of High Self-Esteem Accept yourself for who you are Realistic view of strengths and weaknesses Maintain a positive attitude even when they fail at a task You will be more likely to eat well, exercise regularly, and avoid risky behavior More likely to set goals for yourself Ask for help more often when you need it Can bounce back from set backs more easily

Risks of Low Self-Esteem Don’t have much respect for themselves Judge themselves harshly Worry about what others think of them “Put on an act” to impress others and to hide their insecurities Won’t try new things in fear of failure or looking bad Can be more difficult to succeed

Ways to Improve Self-Esteem Make a list of strengths and weaknesses Don’t be too hard on yourself Rely on your values Learn to accept compliments Look beyond your own concerns Do not focus too much on appearance Set goals

Write 5 Goals Use declaration of intent (I WILL…) Label each goal as short-term or long-term goals Note at least one person you will share each goal with to keep you on track Where will you post this goal to remind you everyday?

Choose TOP Goal Why is this goal meaningful to you? What do you see when you imagine yourself reaching this goal? –Be specific using many adjectives (color, location, type, style, etc.) What does the accomplishment of this goal mean to you?

SMART Goals Specific: Answers the questions - Who? -What? -Where? -When? -Which? -Why? Measurable: Answer the questions such as: -How much? -How many? -How will I know when it is accomplished? - How are you going to measure the progress of your goal? Attainable: You can attain most any goal you set! Realistic: Are you willing to AND able to do the work needed? Timely: When do you want to have this accomplished by?

Example of my SMART Goal Specific –Who: Mrs. Row –What: Finish a half triathlon 1.2 mile swim 56 mile bike 13.1 mile run –Where: North Carolina –When: Before my 40 th birthday –Which: Requirements: –Build up endurance –Buy a race bike Constraints: –Knee problems running on concrete –Why: I love the feeling of accomplishment after I have done something I know I have worked hard for. Measurable –I will measure my progress by being able to finish each leg individually. –Then I will combine them and complete. –I will know I have accomplished my goal when I finish the race. Attainable –I CAN DO IT!!!! Realistic –I am both willing and able to work! Timely –Before my 40 th birthday
