HEALTHY CHOICES: Accepting Responsibility Lawndale High School Ms. Mai

Accepting Responsibility In this class, you will be learning more information about health Whether or not you apply this information to your own life will be your own decision Health knowledge will only benefit you if you use it to make informed decisions about your health Good health is the result of caring enough about yourself to identify and change behaviors that may be harmful to your health

Changing Your Behavior Making changes in your life is never easy Changing your health behaviors can be especially hard because they are often behaviors that have been established for many years There are three main factors that are necessary in making any health change in your life

1. Recognition Before you can make any changes in your life, you first must be aware of the need for change However, sometimes just being aware isn’t enough. For example, you may be aware that eating too much Flaming Hot Cheetos and soda in the morning is bad for you, but this may not be enough to change your health behavior

2. Motivation Recognizing the need for change is useless unless you want to change Different people are motivated to change by different things (mostly fear or desire) For example, diet. Fear because you want to avoid a heart attack or early death. Desire because you want a better figure and more energy throughout the day Unfortunately, even motivation is not always enough to keep you from risky behaviors

3. Commitment True change is an ongoing process in life that takes time and patience Expecting change to happen overnight is unrealistic Being healthy means being in control and managing your everyday life You should also not expect perfection from yourself, but a sense of accomplishment each time you make just one healthy decision in your life

The 7 Step Plan To Change 1. Identify ONE target behavior. 2. Identify the circumstances of the behavior (How were you feeling? When does it occur?) 3. Analyze the information patterns. 4. Set specific goals. 5. Develop a plan of action. 6. Record your progress. 7. Forgive yourself when you slip, but identify what the cause was to prevent it in the future.

In Your Wellness Journal… PLAN TO CHANGE Think of ONE health behavior you would like to change in your life and follow the seven-step model to describe how you will change your health behavior.

Self-Esteem Caring about yourself to want to be the best you can will help you change harmful behaviors Self-esteem – how you feel about yourself (confidence, pride, and respect for yourself) People with good self-esteem are usually comfortable in social situations and relate well to others

Good Self-Esteem Having good self-esteem does not mean that you are perfect. It is simply that you are aware of your weaknesses, and build on your strengths. Having good self-esteem helps a person handle setbacks and accept responsibility for both rewards for successes and consequences for mistakes

Teenage Years You guys are now at a point in your life when you are developing and changing in all areas of your life. You are becoming more independent as you begin to shape your own values. You make decisions on your own!!! In making those decisions, you also need to learn to accept the positive and negative consequences of your decisions.

Teenage Years This is also a time in your life when being accepted by peers is important to you. We tend to select friends with similar values. At times, your values may be tested or questioned by other people. Establishing your own values for good health will make it easier for you to act responsibly in situations. Having good self-esteem will help you to be comfortable and confident to make good decisions.

Strategies for Good Self-esteem Learn to accept yourself for who you are Don’t be too harsh on yourself Be open to new experience Encourage yourself to learn something new Do something positive for someone else Focus on being positive Be rational and realistic with yourself Remind yourself of your personal strengths

Self-Concept People who believe in the important of practicing good health behaviors are secure in holding to their values. They have good self-concept. Self-concept – your view of yourself and your role in life Someone with good self-concept is aware of who they are and what they believe in Having realistic views and accepting yourself is important

In Your Wellness Journal… SELF-CONCEPT Accepting yourself and knowing your strengths and weaknesses are vital for the achievement of wellness in your life. List three strengths about yourself and discuss why these are important values to you. Then list three weakness about yourself and consider why you are uncertain about those things. What can you do or who can you talk to in order to change those weaknesses into strengths.
