A beach ball is an example of a healthy self-esteem that is resilient and able to bounce back. What do you think might happen if obstacles or situations are allowed to lower self-esteem? When the ball was full of air and was pushed on, what happened? When it was full of air and dropped on the floor, what happened? After air was let out of the ball, what happened when it was pushed on? What about when it was dropped on the floor with less air in it? What are some things that can lower self-esteem? Can people lower your self-esteem? How? Is low self-esteem permanent? Why or why not? Is our self-esteem the same all the time? Why? How can you raise your self-esteem? Can other people help raise your self-esteem?

10 Why do we need self esteem?
People with high self-esteem are realistic about their strengths and weaknesses and are able to set goals and work toward them with optimism and humor. They also feel competent in areas they consider important and do not take other people’s negative impressions of them too seriously. Less likely to get involved in high risk behaviors.

Proud of yourself, abilities, skills, and accomplishments Confidence to confront and overcome challenges Confidence to try new things

12 Low Self Esteem People with low self-esteem have a hard time honestly evaluating their strengths and weaknesses and often have an unrealistic, overall negative impression of themselves. They take other people’s opinions of their strengths and weaknesses more seriously than they should. Also, they do not feel competent in areas they consider important. More likely to get involved in high risk behaviors.

Focus on positive aspects about yourself Choose friends who value and respect you Try new activities to discover you talents Exercise! Volunteer your time! Just be yourself, express your individuality. Don’t try to be someone else!

Good mental and emotional health helps you develop healthy self-esteem. Sense of belonging (example) Sense of purpose Positive outlook Self-sufficiency Resiliency- the ability to adapt effectively and recover from disappointment, difficulty, or crisis
