SportMAD

Background of SportMAD Loughborough University have successfully acquired funding for a 4 year sports coaching intervention project called ‘Sports MAD’ What is the aim of the project? Increase participation in sport and physical activity amongst year olds and use the power of sport to engage them with higher education Develop sustainable participation through exit routes into either mainstream community sport or new provision within the local community or school Develop lasting relationships between Loughborough University and schools through sport Increase the number of qualified student coaches and leaders providing them with non-academic qualifications and voluntary work experience to enhance their employability

Coaching in Schools to date Delivering Badminton England’s Programme ‘Smash Up’ in schools, 200 Children have attend these session. Delivering Football Association’s Programme ‘Mash Up’ in schools, 40 children attended this session Delivering 6 weeks of other sports in schools such as Dodgeball, Handball and Basketball, 100 children attend these session A number of coaches are supporting the School Visit Program on Campus with running a number of engaging coaching sessions in different sports to students, 250 children have attended these sessions

Matt McLaughlin ‘Dodge ball coaching was amazing because I was able to work alongside a more experienced 3rd year and learn things off them as well as being able to test drive my own knowledge that I had learnt on my course and also during CPD sessions within the academy. I really enjoyed seeing a progression in the team I coached within schools from a low self esteem group with failing school grades to a higher performing sports team with improved discipline, it was great to see how much of a difference that we made within a 6 week period’

Plans for Next Academic Year Delivery of a 6 week programme one hour a week In school one day delivery New sports identified by schools Event on campus for students who have taken part Working closely with Leicestershire & Rutland Sport with the School games
