4 Outreach in Cambridgeshire  East of England Development Agency Funding – May 06 – March 08  Traveller Health Team – April 2009 – Present

5 East of England Development Agency funding  Two years funding (May 06 – March 08)  Aims  Short Term – Increase the skills base of Travellers in Cambridgeshire  Long Term – Increase involvement of Travellers in existing skills training settings and improve knowledge base and involvement of service providers in meeting the needs of Travellers

6 Targets  Over two years 160 new Traveller learners were to engage in a minimum of 6 hours skills training each

7 Skills Training Sessions

8 Targets Achieved  189 Traveller learners received skills training provision across the county  30 Traveller learners were identified as going on to a second area of sessions or enrolling in some other provision  Many more had stated an interest in progressing to other skills provision

9 Partnership Working  The project worked with over 60 agencies, organisations and individual trainers/skills providers, many of which had not previously worked with Traveller learners

10 Successful Outcomes  3 Learners went into employment as a direct result of attending sessions/courses  2 Learners went into voluntary work  3 Learners following their Work Skills Training sessions went on to actually deliver skills training sessions  1 Learner was nominated for an Adult Learner Award and won!

11 What Didn’t Work!  Responsibility for outreach to and support for learners fell almost entirely to myself and a team colleague  Provided provision (outreach/teaching/progression)  Lack of ongoing support from partnership organisations during and when project finished

12 Traveller Health Team The following team has been employed to address health needs within the Traveller Communities The Traveller Health Team consists of….  Lead Nurse from NHS Cambridgeshire  Project Development Worker from Cambridgeshire Race Equality & Diversity Service Team for Traveller Education  Advocate from Ormiston Travellers Initiative & Admin Support  Health Community Development Worker to lead on establishment of Health Trainers programme.

13 Health Team Project Development Worker  As part of the Team for Traveller Education to work in partnership with the Traveller Health Team to inform, involve & support adult Travellers (16+) in acquiring skills which may be used to enrich/improve everyday life and encourage healthy lifestyles, enabling better access and take-up of health provision.  The project also aims to improve attitudes and cultural awareness of health professionals.

14 Health Needs  Project established in recognition of significantly higher health needs experienced by Gypsy & Travellers  NHS Cambridgeshire looked at health needs in the widest possible sense. Health is much more than being ill & therefore the team consists of professionals to help people to achieve their potential in all areas of their life  To improve Gypsies & Traveller’s personal wellbeing and achieve their potential

15 Traveller Health Team Project Development Worker Supports Gypsies/Travellers accessing skills for life provision Liaises with colleges, services & agencies to encourage Traveller participation on mainstream courses and the running of targeted provision e.g. family first aid, healthy cooking courses Provide culture awareness sessions for services and other organisation Develop strategies to incorporate Gypsies/Travellers into mainstream funding sources and to support delivery of appropriate provision relevant to the communities The following are just some of the skills for life training sessions we have developed and worked with during the project…..

17 Traveller Health Team Project Development Worker Child Care Learning Development Course Courses set up in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire CACHE Accredited course Duration ~ 18 months – 2 years Levels 2, 3 & 4 Progression onto teaching qualification

18 Traveller Health Team Project Development Worker OFSTED Approved First Aid Course Delivered by St John Ambulance in St Neots, Chatteris, Wisbech & Ely Individuals completed and gained certification!

19 Traveller Health Team Project Development Worker Fenland Play Ranger Activities  Encouraging fitness through play  Working with parents to improve childhood obesity

20 Traveller Health Champions  NVQ level 2 Health Champions  NVQ level 3 Health Trainers  Supporting the community accessing health provision
