Unit 16

My WWD We will discover what fossil fuels are, how and when they were created, and how they make energy. by Nick Voyles

What is a fossil fuel? Fossil fuels are the energy the majority of the world depends on. Any combustible material derived from the remains of former life is a fossil fuel.

How are they made? During the Carboniferous period ( meaning coal bearing) which was 360 to 280 million years ago, plants and animals died and sank to the bottom of oceans and swamps. They became peat and had clay and rock deposited on top of them, becoming sedimentary rock.

Types of fossil fuels Coal is a black combustible mineral substance consisting of carbonized vegetable matter, used as fuel. Natural gas is usually 80% methane, combustible mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons that accumulates in porous sedimentary rock. Oil is a combustible liquid and soluble in alcohol but not water.

How do they make energy? The combustible fuel is ignited to heat water turning it to steam and turning generators and thus energy. Fossil fuels are a nonrenewable energy is a natural resource that cannot be generated quickly enough to replace usage.
