Presentation on theme: "Resources What are resources? Resources are materials that can be used and have value What are some resources that people use? Fossil Fuels, Wind, Solar,"— Presentation transcript:

Resources What are resources? Resources are materials that can be used and have value What are some resources that people use? Fossil Fuels, Wind, Solar, Hydropower, etc… Food, crops, livestock

Resources Are people the only ones who use resources? What about animals and plants?

Resources What are some resources that animals use? Birds use twigs to build nests Beavers use trees to build dams Squirrels use acorns from trees

Resources What about plants? Plants use water and nutrients from the soil; and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere And sunlight to make food

Resources Resources are classified based on time - in a lifetime: RENEWABLE: natural resources that can be recycled, renewed, or replaced food, trees, crops, oxygen, animals, water, etc …)

Resources Resources are classified based on time - in a lifetime: NON-RENEWABLE: natural resources that when used take an extremely long time to replace (oil, coal, natural gas, & minerals)

Resources Resources are classified based on time - in a lifetime: INEXHAUSTIBLE: natural renewable resources that cannot be used up and whose quality is not affected by use (solar, wind, ocean tides, etc)

Resources Use the Science CutUps: Resources Rock! To review your knowledge on resources

Let’s try a sample TAKS question.

Not a fossil fuel A fossil fuel Not a fossil fuel

Fossil Fuels Watch the Fossil Fuels video clip Fossil fuels take a VERY long time to form Fossil fuels are a NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCE Let’s watch a short video on Fossil Fuels

Fossil Fuels How do they form? Plants get their energy from the sun, die, get buried and turn into fossil fuels – this takes millions of years

Fossil Fuels There are three fossil fuels Coal formed billion years ago from plants that died but did not rot. Layers of dead plants accumulated and were covered by mud and then turned into rock – storing energy from plants that came from the sun.

Fossil Fuels There are three fossil fuels Oil Formed from microscopic plants & animal in ancient seas. These plants and animal died, accumulated, were covered by mud and turned into rock - storing the energy that was in the plant or animal.

Fossil Fuels There are three fossil fuels Natural Gas Form in a similar way as oil but it is much cleaner burning than coal or oil Natural Gas produces less pollution than coal or oil

Let’s try a sample TAKS question.

What Happened Before: “Rock Layers” Model We can learn about the Earth’s past by looking at the Earth’s rock layers Let’s Make a Model Place a small portion of ___ in your cup Now add some ___ Finally add some __

What Happened Before: “Rock Layers” Model

Let’s Look at Our Model Which layer did we add first? The bottom layer Which layer is the oldest? The bottom layer

What Happened Before: “Rock Layers” Model Which layer did we add last? The top layer Which layer is the youngest? The top layer

What Happened Before: “Rock Layers” Model Which layer is the oldest? Which layer is the youngest? Label the three layers starting with the oldest

What Happened Before: Tree Cookies We can learn about the Earth’s past by looking at the tree cookies We can learn about past climates & fires How old is this tree? You would have to count the rings

Let’s try a sample TAKS question.

Deposited FIRST so it is the OLDEST Deposited SECOND so it is the 2 ND OLDEST Deposited LAST so it is the YOUNGEST

This is in the top layer so it is the youngest
