The student has also gone to think time to reflect on their poor choice(s). Student will miss recess that day, or the following day. *RedA Bad Day Punishment depends on the student and the offense, but typically: Students will have gone to think time, and chosen not to change their behavior, or take think time seriously. Our Curriculum….

90 Minute Reading Block Students spend minutes a day working in a reading group that meets their skill level. As a school Roosevelt uses a reading curriculum called Open Court. Students spend minutes a day working in a reading group that meets their skill level. As a school Roosevelt uses a reading curriculum called Open Court. Open Court Reading is a research-based curriculum grounded in systematic, explicit instruction of phonemic awareness, phonics and word knowledge, comprehension skills and strategies, and inquiry skills.

Saxon Math Developed by John Saxon Saxon Math involves teaching a new mathematical concept every day and constantly reviewing old concepts. Some the many mathematical concepts your child will learn in second grade include: Addition/Subtraction Borrowing/Carrying Telling Time Problem Solving Calendar Graphing Information Patterns Beginning Multiplication

Second Grade Science Units Insects In the Insects unit, the students will be able to learn about various insects, their life cycles, and how they are important to the earth. Insects will be brought into the classroom and students will be able to study them for themselves! Balance and Motion In the balance and motion unit, students experience why/how some things move from one place to another or why some things move around and around in a rotational motion. They learn to modify unstable systems, construct toys that spin, and describe various motions. In the balance and motion unit, students experience why/how some things move from one place to another or why some things move around and around in a rotational motion. They learn to modify unstable systems, construct toys that spin, and describe various motions. The Pebbles, Sand, and Silt This unit provide experiences that heighten students' awareness of rocks as earth materials and natural resources. They will come to know rocks by many names and in a variety of sizes. Pebbles and sand are the same materialjust different sizes.

Step Up to Writing The main focus of Step-Up is organization. Color-coding enables your students to visualize writing organization. Using the colors of a traffic signal, students are better able to see which aspects of their writing need improvement. They can also verify the logic and organization of their ideas. Prioritizing and supporting thoughts are no longer vague conceptsstudents understand where their writing needs to go and how to get there.

What to Expect for Homework Homework packets are given out weekly. Packets include a reading log, and other work that students have been working on in class. Students will receive their packets Monday at the end of the day. Packets should be turned in completed on Friday morning. Students will receive daily math homework corresponding to the days math lesson. Homework at Second grade is designed to be done WITH PARENTAL SUPPORT. Your child will not be able to complete and get credit for their homework without your participation. This is done because studies have proven that doing homework with support leads to better comprehension and understanding, not to mention it is time they get to spend with you! Their special time!
