2 Mrs. Jowers’Class News Sept. 25, 2015 Oh my goodness! I can’t believe that I will be writing an October newsletter next week! Where has the month gone! This week we practiced all of our safety drills. The kids all did a great job, especially on the lock down drill. I was very proud of them. We also had our author visit this week. Mrs. Simoneau was wonderful! Next week we will have Bookmobile on Wednesday again, so make sure you bring back those books! We are also sending home information for our first field trip! So look for that as well. This week we wrapped up our first unit in the reading series! Every unit concludes with a group research project. These projects were lots of fun for all of us. I have taken pictures and will post them on the website for all to see. There was also a lot of testing. I broke it up over several days, so it wouldn’t feel so overwhelming Next week we will be back to normal, starting our second unit. So, check the back page for our vocab, high-frequency and on level spelling lists. Math Madness Our focus this week was on Addition Number Stories. We started the week reading and solving number stories and by the end of the week we were creating our own for others to solve! On Thursday and Friday of each week, we have a Math Workshop time which allows us to practice skills we’ve been working on within our unit in small groups around the room.

3 Mrs. Jowers’ Class News Oct. 23, 2015 Thanks to all our wonderful parents who were able to come to our field trip today. It is great to have so many people participate and it turned out to be a really nice day! Thank you also for signing up so quickly for conferences as well. I am looking forward to seeing everyone. Next Wednesday morning we will start the day in our classrooms and then begin the parade around 9:00. The party will follow the parade. I can’t wait to see all the costumes! Oct. 26,27 & 29 Conferences Oct 28 – Class Parties Nov. 9 – No School In reading this week, we continued our study of animals. This week we focused on comparing animal babies to their parents. We have learned a lot about animal families. Next week, we will begin our fifth week of the unit, but we will not finish it until the following week. So when spelling words go home on Monday, we will not test until Tuesday, Nov. 3 rd. Fire Prevention Month We enjoyed our visit today to the Fire Station in honor of Fire Prevention Month. This week, and into next, we are looking at the job of a firefighter, ways different fires are fought, how firefighting has changed over the last few hundred years, and reminders of how we can prevent fires and stay safe. Now is the month to check those smoke detectors, talk about your family’s safe meeting place, and practice a fire drill in your own home.

4 Mrs. Jowers’ Class News Our essential question this week was “What do you see in the sky?” which has been a great opportunity to incorporate some fun science and space activities this week. We have studied the moon and it’s phases, eclipses, and stars. We have also had the opportunity to check out Discovery Education. Since next week is a short week, we will not have a spelling list. The word lists for week 3 are on the back, but we will not take our pre- test until Monday, November 30. Now that it finally feels like Thanksgiving weather, don’t forget to make sure your child has a jacket or coat and any other cold weather items for recess. We do try to go out for recess everyday and since our recess is in the morning, it can still be a little chilly. We will begin our mitten tree collection next week. In addition to hats and gloves, second grade is collecting combs, brushes, and cleaning supplies. Thanks in advance for all your help! Also, when we come back from Thanksgiving break, we will be working hard on our Winter Program, so there maybe a few schedule changes so we can practice with the third grade. I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving break! Nov. 25-27 – No School - Thanksgiving Dec. 7 – Winter Program Math Madness We have moved into Unit 4 and our focus has shifted from addition and subtraction strategy work to telling time and place value. Each of these new concepts have come with new songs to sing and fun games to play. We are working on telling time to the quarter hour and will move into telling time to the five minute interval soon. Our place value work has us focusing on ones, tens, and hundreds. Our center work this week also focused on these new two new skills as we work to incorporate technology, an activity, and a fun partner or group game into our rotation time.
