What is Literacy? Reading Writing Spelling
Writing Writers’ Workshop ●Mini-lessons- focus on specific skills ●Guided practice- practice skills with teacher modeling ●Independent work- try it on your own ●Peer and Teacher conferencing- check to see if student is applying skills to writing ●Journals- used for various writing throughout the day (ie: reflections, prompts, new learning)
Writing Units ●Letter Writing ●Autobiography- personal narrative ●Persuasive ●Biography ●Poetry
Reading ○ Whole group ■ Consists of mini lessons. ○ Guided Reading ■ Small group practice of skills/concepts learned in the mini lesson with books at instructional level. ○ Independent ■ Daily 5 ○ Individual conferences ■ Periodic one-on-one meeting with me.
Spelling Begin with High Frequency words Words Their Way ○ Phonics based-sorts follow a pattern(ie:long o, short a) ○ Trimester assessments ○ End of the sort assessment ○ Individualized ○ In-class practice (Word Work in Daily 5) ○ At home activities
Math Everyday Math -Concepts: place value, money, time, geometry, math facts, problem solving, beginning multiplication and division, number sense, etc. E-suite -This is a resource for parents and students. Among other things, here you can practice skills through games, print home links, or read family letters. Home Links - These are the homework pages sent along with each completed lesson. You will see these come home after each completed lesson. A challenge page will also accompany the Home Links most days. These are optional. Rocket Math - This is a timed fact practice we do in class each day. Each students progresses at his/her own speed based on passing each level. Math Workshop- This will begin later in the year. More information will follow.

Homework Reading Logs The expectation is to read at least 5 days a week for 15 minutes. This will increase to 20 minutes later in the year. Math Home Link and/or other math pages Challenge pages- These are optional and will be provided most days.
