Presentation transcript:

 To complete and submit a science based investigation according to the following guidelines and procedures.

 Day 1  Overview of project  Brainstorming Topics/Looking at past investigations  Homework:  Write down 3 scientific investigations you are interested in performing.

 Introduction  Introduces the reader to the topic and research about the investigation already conducted. Be sure to include your purpose or what you want to learn about your investigation.  Hypothesis  Possible answer or explanation to your purpose. The hypothesis must be TESTABLE.  Example: Ice melting at the poles cause Earth’s climate to get cooler.

 Research Day  Report to class for attendance then we will report to media lab (Library)  You will begin research on your 3 investigation topics from your homework.  By the end of class you will have picked which investigation you will be conducting based on your research.  Homework:  Begin working on a rough draft introduction and a testable hypothesis to be edited and refined.  Keep researching investigation

 This is where you explain to your readers how the investigation was performed.  Usually includes  Materials used  Experimental design (what you did)  Any statistical tools you used (mean, median, mode)  Write as a narrative, not as a list.

 Report to class; we will not be going to library.  After checking homework, you will get into groups of two.  Begin peer-reviewing introductions and hypotheses to make them better.  Brainstorm how you will conduct your investigation by creating a rough draft of a procedure, materials, etc.  Homework  Plan your investigation – Design a test to confirm or disprove your hypothesis, including a procedure you will follow.  Identify your control groups and variables

 Check homework and report to library.  Begin typing up final copy of introduction, hypothesis, and procedure (what you are going to do)  Homework  Start conducting trials of your investigation and recording the results in a data table to be brought to class and discussed

 Check homework and report to Library  Discuss results with teacher and talk about any problems that occurred during investigations.  Finish typing up procedures and creating data tables in Excel  If you have not completed your investigation yet you will need to by Day 6.  Homework  Finish up investigations if you have not yet  Complete data tables, procedures, etc.  Begin thinking about a conclusion

 Tables

 Graphs  Pie (circle)  Line  Bar

 Helps interpret and summarize data.  Mean – average  Median – middle number or percentage  Mode – most occurring number or percentage

 Begin typing up conclusion.  Conclusion is a paragraph stating the outcome of your investigation and whether it agrees or disagrees with your hypothesis.  Example: It can be show that after extensive investigation and analysis that when ice caps do melt it lowers the temperature of the ocean water as stated in the hypothesis.  Homework  Make final touchups to all parts of the investigation write up: Introduction, Hypothesis, Procedure, Results, Conclusion

 Report to Library after attendance.  This is the final day to have your investigation papers finished, typed, and printed.  You will then begin working on preparing a presentation to present to the class on Day 8.  Homework  Prepare a presentation for you investigation to be given to the class

 1-2 minutes presentation explaining your investigation conducted.  Conducted to share your knowledge with peers  Explains your procedure, data, results and conclusion  You must use your data tables and graphs you created during the write-up.  You may also bring in any models, pictures, etc. that will enhance your presentation  After presentation you will turn in all parts of investigation for grading.

 A large portion of this investigation will be done at home so pick an investigation that is cheap, not very difficult, and that does not require a significant amount of materials or time.  If homework and investigations are not completed you will not be able to finish this investigation on time and will result in a 0% grade for the assignment. If you are not able to complete this assignment you will be given an alternate assignment of the teachers choosing. Notify me immediately if you have any problems.
