The Giver Review for Chapters 1-10

Review quiz These questions cover information we have learned while reading the first 10 chapters of The Giver. Next week we will have a 20-question quiz on these chapters. This material is a review for that quiz so pay attention!

Question 1 Name all the members of Jonas’ family. Tell me as much as you can about them.

Answer – Question 1 The three members of Jonas’ family are his father, his mother and his sister Lily. His father works in the Nurturing Centre taking care of newborn babies, his mother is a judge with the Department of Justice and Lily is a Seven.

Question 2 In a paragraph, describe Jonas’ community.

Answer – Question 2 Jonas’ community is clean and appears perfect. There are no animals, no litter, no crime because they like to have control over everything. This is called the Sameness in the book. They have no bad memories, they can’t see colour and they are run by a Council of Elders.

Question 3 What is the Ceremony of 12? Why is it so important?

Answer – Question 3 The Ceremony of 12 takes place every December. When an 11 becomes a 12, they go to a public ceremony where they are assigned their job for life based on skills they have demonstrated during their Volunteer time and on their personal characteristics that have been observed by the Elders.

Question 4 What two ways are rules changed in Jonas’ community?

Answer – Question 4 The two ways the rules are changed in Jonas’ community are: If it is an important rule, the Elders consult with the Receiver and he decides on the change. If it is a minor or less important rule, the Elders will argue amongst themselves until they come up with a solution or forget what they were arguing about.

Question 5 Who is Gabriel? Why is Jonas’ father worried about him?

Answer – Question 5 Gabriel is a newborn who is at the Nurturing Centre where Jonas’ father works. He will not settle at night and the Elders think he is not developing properly. Jonas’ father is looking after him and is afraid he might be released if he doesn’t start sleeping through the night.

Question 6 Who are the birth mothers? Describe what they do.

Answer – Question 6 The birth mothers have the babies for the community. They are allowed to have three and once the babies are born they cannot see them – they are sent to the Nurturing Centre to be taken care of. When they become Ones they are given a name and assigned to a family. The Birth Mothers become Labourers after their third birth. It is not a desired assignment.

Question 7 What happens during the Ceremony of Loss?

Answer – Question 7 During the Ceremony of Loss the members of the community walk around murmuring the name of the dead person. As the day goes along they speak the name more quietly and by the end of the day they do not say it anymore and the person is forgotten. This happens only when someone dies unexpectedly, not during a release.

Question 8 What does “thank you for your childhood” mean when the Elder says it to Asher?

Answer – Question 8 When the Elder thanks Asher for his childhood she is thanking him for his time as a young person in the community and letting him know it is time for him to become an adult now that he is a Twelve.

Question 9 What is “the capacity to see beyond” mean?

Answer – Question 9 The capacity to see beyond means that Jonas has the ability to see things the other members of the community cannot see such as colour.

Chapter 10 Tell me everything you know about release at this point in the book.

Answer – Question 10 At this point in the book we know release means to be sent out of the community for good and you are never allowed back. We also know there are three kinds of release: 1) the elderly who are at the end of their lives; 2) children who do not develop properly; 3) people who do not follow the rules. People can also ask to be released.
