From Books To Films! WebQuest Presenters: Andrea Heilig & Dana Vendetti EDU 505 Dr. Yang 

Introduction Have you ever wondered how a book is made into a movie? Did you ponder if a movie you are watching was first a book? In English class, do you always ask your teacher if you will be watching the movie of what you have just read? Have you ever read a book that you thought should be made into a movie? Are you ever let down because a movie did not include all of the events that happened in the book? Can you think of the number one reason why watching a movie of a book you just read helps you to understand the story better?

Task As you navigate through the following websites, I would like you to complete two assignments based on books that are made into films. The first assignment is to read a book that has been turned into a movie and complete a review. The second assignment is designing your own movie based on your favorite book. You will have two projects that must be handed in either before or on the deadline.

Process Assignment One: Read a book that has been turned into a film Watch the film that was inspired by the book Write a review comparing them Base your review on the following criteria: 1.Characters : Does the movie portray the characters accurately based on the book? Are all the characters included in the movie? 2.Plot: Does the movie contain the same plot as the book? How is it the same, and how is it different? 3.Conflict: Are the same conflicts present in the movie that you read in the book? Are there are new conflicts or conflicts left out? 4.Opinion: Your opinion counts!! Include your thoughts on whether you like the book or the movie more.

Process: The Review Cont. Remember to include the following in your review: Include the name of the book, the author, the film, and the director Give a plot summary Give a rating out of 1-5 stars, one being the worst and five being the best Must be at least three pages long, double spaced and always cite your sources! Please use the following websites to help you write your review: movie-review.html review.aspx

Books To Choose From: The Body - Stephen King The Freedom Writers Diary Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, etc. - Shakespeare The Crucible – Arthur Miller The Golden Compass – Philip Pullman Harry Potter series – J.K. Rowling Twilight- Stephanie Meyer A book of your choosing Check out the following websites for more suggestions: You must have your choice approved by me before starting

After completing assignment … Move on to assignment

Process Part II Assignment Two: Create your own “film” based on a book you have read You can either remake a film to your choosing or create one that hasn’t been made yet Have fun with this assignment and get creative!

Base your “film” on the following criteria: 1) Make a cast. You may use and ml to find actors and actresses 2) Write out the plot of the story. Include changes you would make and why you would make them 3) Include a soundtrack with at least five songs and why you chose them 4) Create a visual element such as a poster, trailer, character picture, etc. *You must include all elements or it will not be accepted Process Part II Cont.

Presentation You must present either your review or your own movie to the class for a grade. Make it interesting, make it exciting… Include photos, movie clips, posters, etc. Use the following websites to find pictures, clips, etc.:

Resources List of resources available throughout WebQuest:

Evaluation You will be evaluated on completion of the assignments, the quality of work done, citing of sources, no grammar and spelling mistakes, proper use of time in class, and overall presentation to the class. The review is out of 100 points, the second assignment is out of 50, and the presentation is worth 50. Total of 200pts.

Conclusion: Congratulations! You have successfully completed the WebQuest. You should have the following information. 1.A review of a book and its counterpart film 2.Your own movie based on a book 3.A presentation ready to show to the class 4.An understanding of how books become movies

Teacher Page In our ELA classrooms today, many teachers are using movies to help enhance literature being read in the classroom. The benefits of both reading a novel and viewing it are very helpful for students to create a visual, useful to enhance differentiated instruction, and an immense tool to provide for ELL students. The ELA standards that are satisfied by using this WebQuest are the following: Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding. Standard 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.
