Nicotine is the addictive drug in cigarettes Nicotine contributes to plaque build up causing arteriosclerosis Nicotine gum is a nicotine substitute People who use smokeless tobacco can become addicted to nicotine Irritations in the mouth from smokeless tobacco causes oral cancer Nicotine acts as a stimulant

Once addicted to the drug nicotine you must have more and more of the drug in order to satisfy cravings Smoking decreases physical endurance and athletic performance

Women who drink become intoxicated quicker than men Food slows down passage of alcohol to blood stream Alcohol with medicines cause an increased effect verses taken alone Cirrhosis is when liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue

If you are alcohol dependent you are considered to be an alcoholic The second stage of alcoholism is dependence Long term effects of alcohol use is stomach ulcers and high blood pressure How can peer pressure impact your decision on alcohol use? Wanting to gain acceptance in a group, not cool if you don’t drink, feel the peer pressure from others for acceptance and to be liked

Illegal drugs lead to overdose, affect the users family, and lead to getting diseases Side effects are the body’s reaction to medicine and it depends on the body’s chemistry Selling prescription drugs on the street is an example of illicit drug use All drugs are not medicines but all medicines are drugs Antibiotics have no effect on viruses Intentionally taken more medicine than prescribed is substance abuse Antiviral medicines treat viral illnesses

Misuse of drugs is not using them the way they are supposed to be. EX: giving prescription medicine to a person to whom it is not prescribed, taking to much or to little of the medicine, discontinuing use of medicine without finishing it, mixing medicines Prescription medicines are prescribed by doctor and must have a pharmacist fill Over the counter medicines you can buy in store without prescription

Morphine, codeine, and aspirin are all analgesics Marijuana has more cancer causing chemicals than tobacco Marijuana interferes with the immune system and permanently damages it Hallucinogens are never used in medical capacity Inhalants fumes sniffed to cause mind altering effect Inhalants depress central nervous system Most inhalants go immediately to the brain and cause serious consequences
