World Geography Welcome Back! Coach Beck H203 ●Write your name on the index card on one side ●Make a sketch that illustrates something about your summer ●On the back, list three things you know about what’s going on in the world

What will you learn in here? “Spatialize” everything you see Make connections between seemingly disparate items Speculate about the questions of “where?” “why there” and “why care?” Current Events (and apply them spatially)

You will get an opportunity this year to make this true. Enough said

What else will you learn this year? “Geography is Everything & Everything is Geography!!”

Geography is important?

CNN apparently doesn’t know geography either

Both states have a panhandle?

Dallas TV station relocates country and ocean

Americans mapping where Ukraine is

Why does South America look hairy?

And finally, this…

My expectations for you! ●Learn to keep up to date on world events from reputable news sources ●Learn to create and stand by your opinions based on knowledge and insight ●Be able to talk about them ●Learn to work well in a group ●College readiness

Who is Coach Beck? Head Softball Coach/Assistant Girls BBall Love sports Born in Indiana (Notre Dame and IU Fan)

Materials do I need? ●Box of tissues for the classroom (please write your name on the bottom) ●Index Cards (you will need at least 5 packs, but not all at once) ●Colored Pencils ●Blue and Black Ink Pens (for mapping) ●Sandwich size baggies and Sharpie to write on the baggies - one box ●½ inch binder (end of the year for Atlas - you will get back) ●Pencils, notebook paper, red pens as needed ●Mandatory: Planner - I have noticed that students who keep planners do better in my class - so you must bring a planner and write in it as we go over announcements each day!

By the end of the year, what you will know….

Think you can’t do it???

Day 2 Geo Literacy Questionnaire Packet of Passes and Class Rules

How is the class run? ●Bell to Bell ●Student material area and homework turn in area ●Desk Cleared and only notecards out at the bell (you’ll learn which ones soon) ●I prefer you not to get up (distracting) ●Participation Points ●Current Events ●Vocab ●Lesson ●PRE-AP: ONE HOUR OF HOMEWORK PER NIGHT. PERIOD.

What are the Rules and Consequences? ●Follow directions ●Be respectful of each other and me and the substitute teachers* ●Work hard ●Enter quietly, straight to seat, and be ready to BEGIN at bell. ●No phones out without permission (never for texting or non-geography games) Warning, refocus, referral*

REWARDS! Praise Dismissal first An interesting, enjoyable, and challenging class Class food party at the end of the year!

Dismissal Best table during What’s the News gets to go first at the bell. Please clean up and wait for dismissal.

What can I do if I am done early? Only Geography in Geography! ●Sporcle ●Mapping games ●Bookshelf

What do I do if I need help? Ask the people around you first and then ask me.

How do I get my homework? ●Turn in my homework? ●MY WEBSITE!!!!!

How will the teacher get my attention?

What is Geography? Is it more than maps? How much do you already know about geography?
