NorthBay Outdoor Educational Experience North East Middle School September , 2013

What is NorthBay? A residential environmental learning center designed to introduce students to the exciting field of environmental science through immersion in the environment. Simultaneously giving each student a profound experience in leadership and character development.

What do students learn? Character Leadership Adventure Discovery NorthBay Curriculum

Typical Day 7:30 Wake Up 8:30 Breakfast 9:00 Field Studies, Adventure, and Discovery 12:00 Lunch and Social Time 1:00 Field Studies, Adventure, and Discovery 4:00 Recreation and Activity Time 6:00 Dinner 7:00 Activity Time 8:30 Night Show 9:30 Journal/Reflection/ Cabin Discussion 10:00 Lights Out!

Cabins Students are in cabins with 2 rooms, with 5 bunk beds each. The rooms are separated with a bathroom. Boys and Girls are NEVER allowed to be in or around a cabin of the opposite sex! Students are supervised in a cabin by parent volunteers(who have passed a criminal background check), NorthBay counselors, North Bay Educators, and NEMS teachers. Classroom groups are created based on cabin assignments.

Parent Chaperones We are in need of parent volunteers who can commit to at least 2 days and nights! You will receive more information in September if you sign up to volunteer. To sign up to volunteer complete the form at

What to pack! All students should have one “suitcase” (duffel bag) and a book bag. They will need to carry their luggage. Absolutely no radios, laptops, MP3 players, DVD players, tablets or other electronic equipment. Make sure to pack a pair of shoes (water shoes, sandals, old sneakers, etc.) that can be worn in the water!

Packing Check List NorthBay website **A packing list, luggage tags, and specifics about what to pack will be sent home before going to NB** Suntan lotion & Bug spray can be packed in children’s suitcases, but will be collected by the chaperone. Students may bring cell phones, but they must be locked in the cabin safe at all times, except cabin time. If a students fails to follow these expectations the phone will be confiscated until Thursday.

Luggage All luggage should be labeled with the child’s name and cabin. (Luggage tags will be provided.) Please try not to send luggage on the school bus with your child. Luggage should be brought to NEMS, and placed on the trailer or brought to the side entrance of the school Monday (September 9 th ) between 8:00 and 9:30. Luggage should be picked up at NEMS between 12:30 and 2:00 on Thursday (Sept. 12 th ). Please come straight to the flagpole.

Spending Money Snack bars will be open during free time for student and adult use. It is cash only ($5 should be plenty for the week.) The NorthBay Trading Company is open during students activity time in the afternoon. Items range from $0.50- $ THOUGHTS ON NORTHBAY POCKET MONEY NorthBay recommends students bring no more than $50.00 total to camp. $25.00 is average. (Small bills are helpful). Students are not to keep money on them while at camp. They will be given an envelope with their name on it and their cabin chaperone will lock the money in the cabin safe and make sure it is available when your son/daughter visits the store or snack shop. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO GIVE YOUR CHILD CASH, WE HAVE A SOLUTION……

Contacting Your Child While at NorthBay If you must talk to your son/daughter while they are at North Bay please call NorthBay directly and leave a message with the main office there. They will get a message to your son/daughter who will return the call during dinner time at the phone in the dining hall. No news is good news!

Picking Your Child Up at NB Please try not to make any doctor’s appointments, scheduled vacations, etc. this week! Students who are attending NorthBay are expected to stay the entire week! If this is not the case please let us know ASAP! If you should need to pick up your child for any reason: There is a gate. Drive down the long lane to the main office. Please bring picture identification. It will take a little while for us to get your son/daughter from their activity so please be patient. If a child goes home for an appointment or any other reason they will not be permitted to return to NorthBay until the next morning at 9am.

Expectations and Consequences It is expected that students will behave in an appropriate manner at all times. The NorthBay Coordinator will keep a record of any discipline problems while at NorthBay. Once a student has had three warnings for their behavior they will be sent home. If sent home the student will not be permitted to return to NorthBay and should return to NEMS the following day for classes. NorthBay is a fantastic privilege and should be treated as such!!!!
