Mrs.Agi’s Second Grade Class Welcome!

Welcome to Second Grade! There are eight second grade classrooms. Our second grade teaching team includes: Mrs. Agi Ms. Austin Mrs Pickering Mrs. Vazquez Mrs. Eno Ms. Schmidt Mrs. Haynie Mrs. Dempsey

Second Grade Goals To foster the academic and social skills needed to progress in second grade. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To have open communication with you, the parents, to help make this a successful and enjoyable year for your children.

Class Subjects The subjects we cover during Second grade are: Language Arts: reading, writing, and word study Math Science Social studies Music, Physical Education, and Art STEM

Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Our class rules include: Respect others. Respect self. Respect property.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports White Eagle Tickets are given by any adult in the school when they catch a class showing respect. There are rewards for collecting a number of these. Blue Eagle “You were caught respecting” tickets are given to individuals who are showing respect. They will come home the day given. Please praise your child when he or she reports receiving a blue eagle!

Grading Graded assignments will be marked with a 4, 3, 2, or 1 at the top. (4=higher level thinking skills) 3 on a spelling test means your child got all of the spelling words correct 4 on a spelling test means your child got all of the spelling words correct AND all words not on their list that follow the same pattern as the spelling words 3 + means all spelling words and some of the new words that were not on the spelling list were correct

Homework Per county guidelines, second graders should be doing approximately 20 minutes of homework each night. Please help your child by: Guiding your child to check the agenda each night to see what needs to be done. Encourage neat handwriting and praise their organization. Checking your child’s homework and help them make corrections. While each student in the class has the same subjects, content may be differentiated to meet the needs of the child.

1 3 5 7 Weekly Word Study Homework Complete your choice of activities throughout the week to make a total of 10 points by Friday. Activity Points for Each Write in ABC order 1 Write your sort Take a written quiz Write rhyming words Break words into syllables Write at least 5 new words 3 Write synonyms Write antonyms Write 3x each Write and highlight Write sentences 5 Sound hunt Newspaper/Magazine hunt Word hunt Illustrate words Write a story 7 Write definitions Make a game Make a feature collage Make a word search

Reaching Me Emails work best. There is a link on the Liberty website. It is very unusual for an answer to take longer than 24 hours. I check email before and after school. Please do NOT write a note in your child’s agenda. I will rarely see it there. It is your child’s responsibility unpack papers and homework from their folders. I do not check folders. Remind your student to put papers for the school in my basket. If your child is going home a different way than usual, please send a note in the morning or call the school. Thursday folders are out only. Please put all forms or notes in the take home folder.

What I need from YOU Review and initial your child’s behavior chart with them each night. Check homework each night. Contact me with your questions. Return papers that need your signature ASAP. Sign up for a conference and let me know as it gets closer if the time will no longer work for you. Let me know if there are any household changes that may affect your child or their learning. Ms. Scott, our school counselor, is an excellent resource. Please send money in an envelope marked with your child’s name, teacher, and purpose (i.e. lunch money, book order, etc.) Small and large baggies

Absences If your child is sick, please call the absentee hotline to report their absence. If your child is absent more than 3 days, you may request that the missed work be gathered and left in the office for you to pick up. It is not always possible to provide assignments before an absence. The second grade team of teachers prides itself on a creative approach to teaching. Although this creativity makes it very fun when your children are school, it also means that they will miss a lot of learning when they are gone. Creative class projects are not something we can send home to be made up. Please keep your sick children home but get them back to us as soon as you can! 

Birthdays No food please. Consider donating to the classroom instead. Good choices include: Recess equipment Indoor recess board games Classroom CD’s Classroom library books

Volunteers Sign ups are on the table outside the door. Conferences Room parents Copy needs Thursday Folders Conferences Please sign up for a time tonight if you can. A reminder will be sent home a week before your conference.

XtraMath Students will be required to complete at least five minutes of XtraMath, Monday through Thursday. If your student does not have access to a computer, please contact me for alternative math assignments.

Yours Truly I’m so pleased to have your child in my class this year. I’m a busy mom of three, so I understand the demands of family life. Thank you for entrusting your child to me for many hours a day. I promise to treat them with the same love and respect that I’d like for my own children.

Let’s Have a Great Year!
