1 Welcome to Third Grade Mrs. Sanders Room 29

2 Third Grade at Arthur W. Edwards Elementary  School starts at 8:00  Tardy at 8:05  Car Riders, AWEsome Afterschoolers,and Day Care Van Riders are dismissed at 2:45  Blue Corridor Walkers/Bike Riders are dismissed at 2:55  Please plan all vacations around our three week breaks!

3 Classroom Systems Snacks: We have a working snack usually around 10:00…snacks should be neat and filling ( no candy, yogurt, or oranges to name a few). Water Bottles: Your child may bring a pop-up top water bottle only! Please do not freeze water bottles. Lunch: Make checks for lunch payable to AWE. If your child is not allowed to buy snacks, please let me know. Please be sure your child has money on their lunch account at all times if they regularly eat school lunch. Sweatshirt or Light Jacket: We are never sure of the temperature in the classroom and it can get chilly at times. Recess: We go outside EVERY day, please dress your child accordingly. Absences: A note is required within three days of each absence in order to be excused…E-mails are accepted.

4 Classroom Systems Thursday Folders: Folders will come home each Thursday with your child’s school work. Please look through the folder, sign the communication sheet and return to school the following day. For any work with a grade of 75% or below:  Have your child correct and missed problems (spelling words should be written 5x each)  Parent signature is required  Return work to school in Thursday Folder. Five points will be added to your child’s grade. Newsletter: Usually twice a month

5 Curriculum Reading  Reading for information  Learning to Inference  Compare and Contrast  Facts and Opinions Guided reading, reading homework, and reading longer texts such as chapter books and reading comprehension sheets are used to build comprehension. Math  Number sense to 1,000,000  Multiplication Tables  1-10  2 digit by 1 digit (52x7)  Division  Tables and 1 digit into 2 digit  Measurement: Converting units of measure (standard and metric)  Multi-Step Word Problems  Algebra-Unknown Variables

6 Testing End of Quarter (EOQ)  Given at the end of each nine weeks by Craven County Schools for Math and Reading.  Information is used by the teacher to align further instruction.  A score of 60% or above is a good indicator that your child is on track. Cognitive Testing (COGATS)  Given in November  Scores are used along with classroom grades and teacher recommendation for placement in the Academically Gifted Program. End of Grade (EOG)  Given in May  Students are tested in Reading and Math  A score of a 3 or 4 is passing  3 rd grade is a Gateway year (students are required to pass in order to move on to 4 th grade)  There will be a Parent Academy for more information on the EOG’s at a later date.

8 The following infractions are referred straight to the Office:  Physical Harm to Self and/or Others  Inappropriate Language Personal Behavior Plans Override Consequences

9 Homework  Homework will be copied for the week in your child’s agenda and initialed as correct by be at the beginning of the week.  Check the agenda each night and initial that your child has read for the assigned amount of time or completed the reading assignment-be sure your child has completed the reading log.  Be sure to check for notes from me.  There will be a math sheet to complete each night.  Students have a spelling contract and a list of the words for the quarter. Spelling should be completed in their spelling notebook. This is also handwriting practice and needs to be done neatly!  Science and Social Studies-students will complete home projects  The consequence for incomplete homework will be to complete the assignment during lunch at the silent lunch table.  E-mail me with any homework questions. In order to be fair, I do not allow children to “make-up” homework or call home to get work they forgot. If there is an extenuating circumstance, please let me know.
