TUG OF WAR Presented by Wendy Armstrong, Director of Accounts Payable in the office of the Auditor of State of Indiana, Connie Nass

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP Experience can make an expert

What works for one might not work for another! Any similarities are only a coincidence

My Bio Proves my Experience 20 years experience With Government Served on multiple Committees Have multiple careers Owned own business

Community Involvement is an excellent way for you to get free experience School Board Church Board Girl/Boy Scouts Neighborhood association Coach a team sport Volunteer

Find your style! Experience develops your management style. Wendy is lying- she has 40 years experience FIND A STYLE THAT SUITS YOU??

Surround yourself with good Mentors My mentors have taught me patience They have taught me to be a good listener How to motivate others The importance of honesty

First time managers!! Take Charge Keep an eye on details Establish your authority; you teach people how to treat you

MOTIVATE! MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

Be visible and accessible

HAVE WEEKLY MEETINGS Start off with praise!

Ive become Infamous for MY LAST MEETING THE RESULTS 2 Key employees resigned THE OUTCOME I survived and my employees survived. They became better workers and I became a better supervisor

BE A GOOD LISTNER! EVEN IF YOU DONT AGREE- THATS RIGHT- EVEN IF YOU DONT AGREE! Thank you for your thoughts!

USE PRAISE!!!

PERFORMANCE REVIEWS Address the following: problem behavior poor performance conflicts

Again, dont be afraid to delegate ! Do not waste your time learning the fine details of your employees job. Learn the end result, learn which employee can make that happen, and then have that employee cross train!

Remember that a persons name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. - by DALE CARNEGIE Tom "Voice Of The 500" Carnegie, has been announcing the race since WWII.

THE BOSSS BOSS That means sometime you are caught in the middle- this is not a problem if you handle it properly.

In can become a TUG OF WAR between your employees and boss. The war is for your time and attention.

What happens in your office…. stays in your office…… Treat it like a family- If Momma Aint Happy- aint nobody happy!

MY BOSS When she returns from a conference or seminar with fresh ideas- Listen…. Wait….let the ideas filter to the top of the list and then…. MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Arbitrate between the employee and the chief Help the employee understand new policies Implement the policy Always support your boss- never undermine your boss authority to your staff. You personal disagreements should be in private.

MIDDLE MANAGMENT THE REASON YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE IS BECAUSE YOUR NOT ALONE. Always remember WE

Learn from your mistakes, stay interested in your field of expertise. Never stop learning. Never stop teaching. Your employees are reflection of you. Your success depends upon their success and with good leadership everyone wins! It comes full circle! But

Seeing within; changes one's outer vision. Joseph Chilton Pearce

I believe my advice will give you a balanced, successful career and a peace of mind!

Thank you for your time today ! If you have any questions regarding my presentation please
