2 Objectives Lead your employees by developing a management style and desirable leadership qualities. Motivate your employees by delegating responsibility and listening. Evaluate your employees.

3 Lead Your Employees Levels and Styles of Management
There are three basic levels of management: supervisory, middle, and top The amount of responsibility varies with the level of management As the manager moves up, the amount of responsibility increases The number of managers at each level depends on the size of the company

4 Supervisory level managers- work directly with workers on the job
Responsible for implementing plans of middle management Middle management- serves as a liaison between supervisory level and top management Responsible for implementing the goals of top management Top management- responsible for establishing the vision for a company Has the highest level of responsibility

5 Management Styles Style- way of working with those whom they supervise
Empower- giving employees authority to make decisions without supervisory approval Gives employees a sense of pride and responsibility, reduces delays in work flow, and reduces workloads

6 Desirable Leadership Qualities
Judgment- makes decisions carefully and objectively Honesty- behaves ethically in decisions and treatment of others Consistency- predictable and emotionally even Enthusiasm- generates enthusiasm in others

7 Cooperation- works well with others
Communications- listens, speaks, and writes effectively Dependability- follows through on commitments Understanding- respects feelings and needs of people

9 Enforce Employee Policies
As the owner of the business, you will need to make decisions about policies regarding vacations, holidays, hours, and dress code. Many companies communicate policies to staff by creating an employee handbook Can be a few pages long or fill a binder

10 Train Your Employees Well-trained employees perform their jobs well.
They: Know what is expected of them Have high morale Are less likely to quit

11 You will need to create a training program for new employees.
Training should not end when the employee learns how things are done. Continuous employee improvement helps your business.

12 Options for Employee Training
on-the-job training- employees learn new responsibilities by actually performing them at their place of business coaching- employees receive feedback and instruction from their manager on a constant basis mentoring- one employee teams up with another more experienced employee to learn a job conferences and seminars- employees learn new techniques or duties from an expert After training, you need to make sure employees are using the training.

13 Safety Practices and Procedures
Employees should know how to: operate equipment safely wear any necessary protective gear Employees should be briefed on emergency plans for fires, tornadoes, and other disasters You should map evacuation routes on your floor plan and post them throughout the building.

15 Motivate Your Employees
To get the most out of your employees, you will have to motivate them. You can do this several ways: pay them well- when employees feel they are compensated well they will be happier and perform to the best of their ability treat them fairly- everyone wants to be treated well and equally

16 recognize them for the work they do- offer public recognition for good work
employee of the month special parking spot give them adequate responsibility- employees who are allowed to make decisions often take pride in their work and work harder

17 Delegate Responsibility
Delegate- let other people share workloads and responsibilities Employees who are given more responsibility are better motivated to contribute more to the company and make the most of their talents Delegating allows you to focus on important item such as expanding into new markets and offering new products Paperwork and duties that someone else can perform will not bog you down.

18 Listen to Employees People who work for you are very familiar with your business and can offer fresh ideas. Listening to new points of view may help you come up with new creative solutions. If they feel they are a valuable asset, they will be more likely to do a good job.

20 Work as a Team Employees who work as a team are usually very committed. They are more likely to work harder and come up with creative ideas.

21 What Makes a Good Team To be an effective team leader, you will need to do the following: Establish trust among team members and gain their trust. Make sure that all team members understand the goals you have set. Encourage team members to be creative and innovative.

22 Make team members feel like partners in your business.
Help team members learn from their mistakes. Build the team’s commitment to achieving the goals you have set.

24 Evaluate Your Employees
Create an Evaluation Procedure Most businesses perform annual employee reviews which determine whether the employee earns an increase in salary. The job description should be used when evaluating how well an employee has performed. If the employee has performed all of their duties, they should receive a raise. The review should be recorded on an appraisal form.

25 The form should include:
Employee name Job title Manager’s name Date range the evaluation covers Job responsibilities Places for comments Goals for next year Areas for improvement Evaluation reviews should be kept in the employee’s personnel file for future reference.

26 Promote Employees Promoting good employees will ensure that they remain interested in working for your business. Make sure all decisions are made fairly based on evaluation results. Volume of sales, quality of customer service

28 Dismiss Employees As soon as you notice an employee is not working well, discuss the situation with them. If performance does not improve, issue a written warning. If there is still no improvement, dismiss the employee.

29 Once you decide to dismiss an employee, do so immediately.
Meet with the employee privately to explain why you are letting them go. Ask the employee to leave the workplace and record the date of employment termination and reason in the employee’s file.
