3 SOCRATIC SEMINAR GUIDELINES:  Do not raise your hand during discussion.  Do not interrupt another person. Begin speaking when he or she has finished.  Be respectful of all participants’ opinions.  Disagreement is fine. Do so in a respectful manner.  Don’t direct your comments to the teacher– direct them to everyone.  Support your opinions with evidence from the text.  Use all of your “talking chips.” (optional strategy)  Don’t be afraid to ask questions!  Remember... there’s no one “RIGHT ANSWER.”

7 Agree / Disagree Has anyone else had a similar...? Who has a different...? Clarification I'm not sure I understand...? Tell me more about...? Do you see gaps in my reasoning? Are you taking into account something different from what I have considered? Support Questions Can you give us an example of...? Where in the story...? What would be a good reason for...? What is some evidence for...? Cause and Effect Why do you think that happened? How could that have been prevented? Do you think that would happen that way again? Why? What are some reasons people...?

8 Counterexample Would that still happen if... ? What might have made the difference? Different Situation Can you describe a situation that would...? Suppose ________________. Would that still be true? Why or why not? Solicit Questions What are some things that you wonder about? What would you like to know about? Are there questions we should remember now?

9 Opening Questions are designed to get participants to identify the main ideas and/or values in the text. Example: What word or phrase in the text is most important? Why? Core Questions are designed to have participants closely analyze the details of the text. Example: Based on the text, what is meant by... ? What is the relationship between _________ and _________ ? What might we infer based on... ? Closing Questions are designed so that participants personally evaluate the ideas and values. Example: What does this text teach us about... ?
