EARTH WEEK Be Part of it!

Environmental Issues  This is your school. Your city. Your state and country. Your world – your planet.  With a partner – share for 20 seconds each what you consider to be the biggest issue regarding our planet.  As a class, come up with one Learner Profile attribute you think is most relevant to taking care of our planet.  Enter your vote on the Quick Poll on the ESMS website.

California Water Facts  The last four years have been the driest years in California’s history.  January 2015 has been one of the driest month in CA history.  March 2015 measured only 12% of the average snowpack in California. Beside skiing & snowboarding, why is snow pack important?

Water Reduction  So what can we do? Here’s an easy solution - take 5-minute showers instead of 10 minute showers. Save:  12.5 gallons with a low flow showerhead,  25 gallons with a standard 5.0 gallon per minute showerhead.  Turn off the water while washing your hair. Save: Up to 150 gallons a month

What else can you do to reduce water? 1. Discuss 5 options with a partner, on how to reduce more water at home. 2. Share with your class.

Take the shower challenge! 1. Take a shower and time it. 2. Try to take a shower that will take less than 5 minutes. 3. On Friday of this week, your science teacher will take count of how many students reduced their shower time to 5 or less minutes.

Reusable Water bottle What: Bring a reusable water bottle to school every day. It saves a lot of trash. When: Everyday but on Monday and Friday your science teacher will take a count of how many of you brought reusable water bottles. GO GREEN

Trash Free Lunch What: It is lunch that does not generate ANY trash. When: Bring a trash free lunch all week. Your science teacher will take a count on Tues. and Thurs. of who brought a trash free lunch that day. GO GREEN

What does a Trash Free Lunch look like? USEDon’t use Reusable water bottlesDisposable plastic bottles or juice boxes ContainersZiploc bags (You can’t recycle them!) Buy big bulk (pretzels, chips, etc) and put in containers Individual wrapped packages Cloth napkinPaper napkin Silverware (real forks and spoons)Plastic forks and spoons Bring a trash free lunch boxPaper bag or plastic bags

Walk/Bike/Car Pool What: Walk, ride your bike or scooter or car pool (at least with one other student) to school. When: Walk, ride, car pool all week. Your science teacher will take a count on Wednesday of who walked, rode or car pooled to school that day.

Lunch Activities We will have three fun lunch activities this week: 1. Scavenger Hunt 2. Book Exchange 3. Nature Walk

Scavenger Hunt When: Wednesday at lunch time Where: Check in with the Green Team Students at the quad by Bulldog hall What: Find and answer questions.

Book Exchange When: Thursday at lunch time Where: Quad by the bulldog hall What: Bring a used book from home to our exchange station that day. Take a book from the exchange station if you like. You can pick a book even if you did not bring one in.

Nature Walk When: Friday at lunch time Where: Meet Mrs. Klein in the quad What: Walk around and help make your campus look more “nature-like” again. Each student who participates will get a ticket for a raffle.

Shoe Drive  ESMS PTSA is collecting used shoes to donate to those in need. There are bins around campus.  We will accept a wide variety of shoes including tennis shoes, casual shoes, dress shoes, and any other type of shoe that is in a wearable condition. All shoes must come in pairs.  The PTSA actually earns $$ for your donations. All proceeds will go to help the PE department purchase a new sound system!
