Virginia has good farmland and is bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains to is West. Religion did not play as big of a role as it did in colonies such as Maryland or the New England colonies. THE COLONY OF GEORGIA Georgia was founded in 1732 by James Oglethorpe. Georgia was established as a place of debtors in prison could go to start a new barrier against the Spanish expansion from Florida. Georgia is dry with many pine trees and vine-like plants. Landscape is full of tough, red clay which limits the growth of many plants. Georgia was also not concerned with religion. Georgia’s economy was influenced by the trade of tobacco, rice, wheat and indigo. Georgia was the last colony to be established, it was originally named ‘The Province of Georgia’.

THE COLONY OF MARYLAND Maryland was founded in 1634 by Lord Baltimore. Baltimore (Maryland) was created by the desire of a profit, also as a refuge for Roman Catholics being persecuted in England for being Protestants. Maryland has no natural lakes with dry landscape. It had sandy and muddy soil with lots of marshlands, sandy dunes, and pine groves. Maryland was known as a haven for Catholics. The economy of Maryland was mainly influenced by tobacco. Maryland used a great deal of slavery on large plantations, where much work was necessary.

THE COLONY OF NORTH CAROLINA North Carolina was founded in 1653 by Virginian colonists. It was established by King Charles II when he issued a royal charter to 8 nobles to settle the area south of Virginia. North Carolina has rich soil that is perfect for crops. There is an abundance of natural water, but many places near the Appalachian mountains were difficult to farm on. Little influence of religion on the colony of North Carolina. North Carolina’s economy was mainly influenced by crops such as tobacco, grain, and rice. Lumber also were profitable. North Carolina was the first state to instruct its delegates to vote for independence from the British crown during the Continental Congress. North Carolina was also the least profitable of the southern colonies.

THE COLONY OF SOUTH CAROLINA South Carolina was founded in 1663 by Lord Berkeley & Sit George Carteret. It was established the same way North Carolina was; by King Charles II’s royal charter. South Carolina had many natural ports and good harbors. There were occasional earthquakes and hurricanes became more & more frequent. Religion had very little influence on the colony.
